I am currently experiencing this right now. I have ruled out bowel, bladder, and skin. Also, it usually occurs a few hours after I fall asleep and continue until I get in the chair in the morning. I have severe sweating above my level of injury C-4/C-5. Also, chills, Goosebumps and sometimes headache. I am unable to check my blood pressure in the middle of the night. The ER did a CT scan of my abdomen and found nothing. I am lost, it has to be something right! ? This is miserable
Have you always experienced this, in this pattern, since having SCI?
Lαrα, this has been on and off for the last month. I can go three days with no symptoms but it keeps coming back. I literally have droplets of sweat dripping off of my face at night. My pillow and hospital gown gets soaked. My mom usually gets up with me to dry me off and things like that. I feel bad because she has to get up for work in the morning. I am not sure where to begin.
Jlynn, we are brainstorming for you. Forgive me if my suggestions are off the beaten track. First, here's a quote about disreflexia,...just to be sure that we are on the same page: "Autonomic dysreflexia means an over-activity of the autonomic nervous system – the part of the system that controls things you don’t have to think about, such as heart rate, breathing, digestion, etc. AD can occur when an irritating stimulus is introduced to the body below the level of injury. The stimulus sends nerve impulses to the spinal cord, where they travel upward until they are blocked at the level of injury." pushliving.com/how-pain-can-kill-the-autonomic-nervous-system-can-create-havoc-in-response-to-pain-stimulus-in-those-with-spinal-cord-injuries/
And here, without further ado, here is my unglamourous suggestion. Take herbs that kill parasites,...wormwood, cloves, black walnut hull tincture. www.holistichelp.net/intestinal-parasites.html "When these unwelcome visitors take up residence in your body, they consume your nutrients for survival and emit a variety of toxins like ammonia that can impair not only your gastrointestinal tract, but your detoxification system, brain, autonomic nervous system and immune system as well and lead to a wide variety of psychiatric and medical health conditions. Parasites not only feed on the food and nutritional supplements that you consume, but they also feed on your cells, blood, and glucose."
Hi everyone. As a quadriplegic (with diabetes type 2) for 15 years, I have a serious issue with AD for a few days now.
Usually, I'd get an AD episode on bladder release (end of the procedure) when having an UTI. I also had AD episodes when I had some more haemorrhoid bleeding, during digital stimulation. During several UTIs I had a serious one, with my blood pressure (BP further in text) going as high as 185/100-ish, from usual 100/60. By solving the UTI problem using antibiotics, AD would be gone. That happened only a few times. Regular AD was never that high to cause serious headache or that high BP.
Now, I also had a UTI, used fosfomycine, the urine looks clear now (waiting results from the new sample), but my AD episodes on pain remain. Sometimes bladder release causes pain which results in an AD episode, but my defecation does that every time now (every other day).
I have no idea what is causing it to work like that now. And I'm scared AF. Wouldn't like to die and leave my dear wife and son alone.
I need help and advice on how to diagnose and detect what is causing all my ADs to be so aggressive instead of mild and headacheless as usual? What can cause it? Does anyone here have any experience of this kind?
I've checked my toe nails, all looks fine. Checked my skin, looks fine. No wounds, no fractures. Nothing looks much out of the ordinary. Don't have any stomach pain either. Can a folliculitis in groin area cause it? I have it as a chronic problem and it doesn't look any worse than usual, but still... Blood clog? Kidney stones or sand? Prostate being larger and irritated or hurt by catheterization?
Also, would it help to take ibuprofen or paracetamol (which one should be better for pain?) prior to defecation to prevent or lessen pain and thus AD episodes?
Thank you for all the advice you can give. Sincerely
hay, i am ive, i am tetraplegic, c4 / 5 I use foley catheter and I often have uti then I have a problem with disreflection, it manifests itself with strong sweating Is there a medical for it?
hello Ive. There is medication to bring down blood pressure. When I have autonomic dysreflexia I take and nifedipine sublingually, which is under the tongue. It is a liquid which comes in a capsule. You prick the capsule with a needle and squeeze some under your tongue (I have three capsules already squeezed out in a small dish and I dip a cotton bud into it). Once your dysreflexia is under control, spit the nifedipine out and wash your mouth round. Don't leave it in your mouth too long or your blood pressure might crash. You can also take GNT tablets which you put under your tongue. GNT is glyceryl trinitrate. Once again you spit them out. Measure your blood pressure if you feel odd, preferably one that goes round the arm and not the rest. They are more accurate.
When I have Autonomic Dysreflexia, I have no big problems with the pressure but with heavy sweating. That's a big problem in the winter when it's cold and then I still sweat and become much cooler and more uncomfortable. I used 75mg pregablin pills, which calmed the autonomic nervous system but then I problems with digestion, digestion would also slow down.
hello Ive. What you describe is not autonomic dysreflexia. Autonomic dysreflexia raises the blood pressure to dangerous heights. You're describing a physiological disorder which is common in spinal injury. It is a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system but not autonomic dysreflexia ( in the true sense of the word ).

Could be a back ache from the way your laying, try raising your knees with pillows keep trying little changes. I have to wait 20 to 30 minutes between adjustments to see if it helps or hurts but I have found a good combination of pillows and bed position that gets me pretty comfortable.
