For years never had to many problems,But the last few years bowels stopped me doing what i wanted,so made appointment with GP then saw incontinence nurses, finally got appointment with consultant and went ahead and had colostomy in October, was in hospital 6 days then home, stoma nurses visit often, had a few small leaks till found right bag and seals etc, And things are going well, made a huge difference and so far the small leaks have taken 5 min to fix and no shower and change of clothes needed

Good to hear that the colostomy has helped you to take control over your bowels , rather than the other way round trikerv8.
Hi Tri. I see on your other post that you are T9, the same as me. I'm incomplete. I hope that I never need a colostomy, but I'm glad to hear your success story, in case it ever comes to that for me.
Hi i've just joined so a bit about me,i had a motorcycle accident back in 1982,Im T9 paraplegic with a brachial plexus injury to left arm,I'm still in to bikes and been riding a trike for 25 years, life is one big party

Thats great, happy for you really. Wanted too, but my only way would be a ileostomy. And thats not so easy to handle over the day. Not mental ready for this step.

You are much braver than I am! I am so glad that you are happy with this.
Too funny and sad -- I laugh because it's so true. I loved the bathroom as an office -- maybe a good way to explain this to others is doing a colon prep because, you can't leave. It doesn't get into the unpredictability but it does translate to some degree. Now, ask your friends to do a colon prep and go out to a bar, restaurant, work, whatever. I think this exercise might teach them something. Don't forget to have them dress nicely ;-) and make sure there are crowds.
I've started keeping an old laptop in my bathroom. Fortunately, my bowels are pretty much under control. However, it can be nice to get some work done and watch netflix!
During my last visit with the doctor he asked me how long it typically took me to do my bowel routine. My answer, "well it really depends on how engaging whatever I'm watching on Netflix is."

I am sure that there is many great works created from the bathroom seating area!
I'm not sure how to post this. Bowel Movement. Yeah we all know... In fact I am delaying going to the toilet as I write this. I haven't read all the bowel issues posts as there are so many of them. MY method is an old one, what I wa taught back in 1980. The digital method, whereas I have to use the middle finger on my right hand to stimulate then dig what didn't come out first try, I reach the inner spincther, The worst part of my day other than lying in bed in full lower body pain. But when done I am relieved:-)
Oh, bowels ... hmm ... well, yes, me too. Thanks all for sharing your stories, it really helps to speak with people who KNOW. I also was trained with the digital method and for 18 years it worked rather well, with accidents but not too often, and every evening like clockwork, I could sit on toilet and extract. Then I had a urostomy (iléal conduit). I am super happy with the results for the peeing function of my body, However, it completely upended my BM routine and it has become a bummer. I have accidents much more often to the point where I have to wear diapers as well. For the last few months I’ve been getting some regularly but twice a day: around 11:00 am and evening. I went to gastrointestinal doc and she was less than helpful. She had me set up for a colostomy (in hospital prep! That was awesome) and she said that sometimes it helps the bowels get retrained. We’ll see: that was yesterday and I am retraining my intestines to be ready to poop st night not during the day whenever they’re ready. Wish me luck.
Hipcrip, you’ve become a “serial liker”. Not that I’m complaining. My bowels have a very...hmmm...independent spirit. They like to tell when they are ready,...not the other way around.
At the risk of sounding like a cheesy infomercial...
This was my life too for 10 years - it nearly killed me - but I had a colostomy done 3.5 years ago and I'd never go back. Now, my bowels never affect my comings & goings. I can eat whatever I want and am much healthier. And I've been able to travel much more freely and basically return to a normal life in terms of engaging with society. My only regret is not having done it much sooner!
Vintage, I’m assuming “serial killer” is a good thing, which is funny because I’ve never thought of it as applying to ME...so thank you. And really my bowels were trained to come in the evening. That is what I learned at Craig Rehab Hospital in Denver. Liberty, OMG really? I know that’s how I feel about my urostomy, but colostomy sounds extreme although, of course, I don’t feel that way about my pouch. Wow... gonna think about that one. Thanks for sharing your situation.
