Hi petelanddownunder, if you get a freewheel you will wonder how you got by without it for so long. The best thing I have ever owned, they are $600 here mate.
Camera shop said that my video camera is damaged beyond repair and I can't afford a new one just yet, bugger. Wish I can show you all how I go down stairs even without my freewheel, hahaha.
I would say screw the stairs! Pop a wheelie and go down the grass next to it. Much safer, and a softer landing if you fall! I always just walk or butt-scoot up and down stairs. No point in getting hurt if I can do it a safer way.

Butt scoot! Hmm, I tried it once but mine must be bigger than yours plus the steps were steep. Do you put something under you to soften the steps? I have a big butt, but boney ass.

I've been brainstorming; perhaps a gel thing that straps on kind of like a diaper, but on the outside of your pants, kilg0retr0ut
I think the front and back wheels could really do with some adapted shock absorption, bearings would last long. As i see it the front wheel elongates the base which is good for stability.
We just cannot afford to shear skin if butt-scooting. I keep one of those inexpensive closed cell kneeling pads (10" X 28") in my back pack to use under butt on stairs when needed, and it has a convenient handle cut-out. It is very lightweight, and I can also use it to sit somewhere hard if I want to get out of chair for a break.
