I was shocked to read that the low cost Singapore Airline charges wheelchair using passengers an assistance fee of £23/$40/€30 per flight. So not quite so low cost after all! It really does annoy me when i see companies using blatant disability discrimination. In fact in some countries it is illegal to charge passengers a fee who have mobility needs. Here in the UK the wheelchair assistance is free..and it should be too!
TigerAir wheelchair service fees are 60% higher than AirAsia, currently charging SGD 20 to provide wheelchair assistance at Changi Airport.
"Tigerair charges a total of SGD 50 for providing wheelchair assistance at both the departing and the arrival airports," a spokesperson for the airline confirmed on Wednesday.
Tiger Airways wheelchair service fees are nothing compared to their charges for ambulifts, high loaders used to embark and disembark people with severe mobility limitations. TigerAir ambulift service fee is SGD275 (£130/$220/€160) per segment.
Lets hope that companies like this start to realise that they would be doing themselves the biggest favour in looking after this cross section of the population..Disable travellers have family and friends, so they can either wise up and treat us equally or damage their own reputation and business potential.
That is so depressing... While I never expect to travel in the Pacific Rim, it is clear that disability awareness is much less in many parts of the world. Thanks for making us aware to ask about such possible charges.
Yeah it's unfortunate that we - the ones who are suffering have to pay more for things. Singapore is a good country and I'm sure it'll change it's policies eventually but it's going to take much longer for third world countries. I can understand why it's like that but it's too bad.
Tiger has been flying to Alice Springs from Sydney and Melbourne for about six years, apart from when they where grounded, now they are pulling the pin on us up here, they have decided that Alice Springs is not profortable, although all their flights are full. So now we have only one airline again, QANTAS, who charge like wounded bulls. It cost me over $1000 to fly to Sydney return for my fathers funeral three years ago. By the way it is against the law to charge extra for disabled people in Australia.
They dont sound like such a good company Butiki! Its good to hear that the same applies in Australia and disabled travellers arent paying unfairly for assistance :-)
