I've helped create a not-for-profit spinal cord injury fitness centre near Vancouver, BC. There's a real lack of long term rehabilitative services in Canada and I'm trying to help by providing one. The centre will be safe, accessible, positive, and provide a tiresome exercise program. Clients will work one-on-one with a certified trainer to work below the level of injury to try regain lost muscle function, reduce spasticity, prevent atrophy, and improve overall quality of life. It opens in December, 2014!
I credit what recovery I've had to exercise therapy and I'm hoping to provide the same to others like me so if you could share this, that'd be great! Contact me by messaging (or leave a comment below) if you have any questions or through the following:
That is fantastic to be opening up such a center in Canada. There is a new non-profit fitness center that recently opened up in the United Kingdom called Neurokinex. Neurokinex will be at the Working 2 Walk Science and Advocacy Symposium. The Rick Hansen Foundation in Canada is making travel grants available to people in Canada that are interested in research and rehabilitation for spinal cord injury. Please consider coming to the symposium and telling us all about your new fitness center and collaborate with others that are launching the same type of facilities in other countries! It would be wonderful for you to have the help and connections!
Neurokinex is the UK’s leading provider of neurological activity-based rehabilitation. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to providing innovative health solutions for individuals living with partial or complete paralysis. Our mission is to improve health, independence and wellbeing of these communities through access to activity-based rehabilitation.

I live in North Vancouver. I am recovering from CES from a fall in December and surgery T12; L2-S1 and I will be returning to Canada in early May (long story.) Can you give an idea of what area you are in in the GVA as I will be needing rehab/re-education upon my return. I have had a four months stay at a re-education clinic here in France and I realize that I will need to continue working at it or I will lose all the benefits I gained over that time.
terry5198 I see that you're about 2 hours from Toronto? One of the best rehab centres for spinal cord injury is in Toronto, the lyndhurst centre. I'm surprised they didn't send you there because I've seen people who were sent in from other parts of the country and I even met one guy who was sent in from the Middle East!

Terry, I'm probably late to the party, but the centre is in Richmond. My guy goes three three times per week from White Rock. This means he has to travel each way through Deas Tunnel. Sounds daunting, but the good folks there have scheduled his therapy between rush hours so it's not a real burden. He has really enjoyed it and the therapy has helped him make significant improvements in strength and conditioning.
