A friend of mine just suggested this topical remedy that does require a prescription from a doctor and a pharmacy to mix it up:
4% Gabapentin 4% Amitriptyline 10% Emu oil in Salt Stable Lo
I do not know the name of the concoction. My friend got the information from KU Medical Center and says it helps him to sleep at night when his nerve pain is most prevalent. I was wondering if anyone here had any more knowledge of this topical and had any luck with it before I call my doctor. I am already taking 1200mg Gaba 3X daily but still have independent episodes of shooting nerve pain. My pain journal has not led me to find any patterns of if/when/how it hits. It just hits and is very debilitating. I am looking for any relief possible when I have a "bad" day.
faery I think you should definitely see what your doctor has to say about that. Looks like it's a concoction to help with nerve pain since I've used Gabapentin before but I'm not sure about the rest of the stuff.
meditation takes some practice. I needed a teacher(so I went to group introduction to it). It was great for me in a previous different medical er.. 'situation' a few decades ago. I found I could read about it and practice some, but really needed a leader in it to 'get it'. Once I did, no help was needed; only permission from myself to take the 30 minutes and do it, which I did grant myself after a bit of discussion....If you have not tried it, and someone thinks it might help, I recommend giving it a good faith effort and see what happens.
On other fronts, I did have angiogram the other day, and my fistula is not coming back inside my spine, so we have ruled that out as an issue. Still not sure why I have lost so much strength in last 6 or 8 months, but moving on to other possible stuff now. Also pool therapy is helping , although I did over do(at the direction of PT person a week ago. Between that and having angiogram on Monday, I am wiped out for few weeks or so). I plan to start back with PT and have talked with the therapist about what set it off. My big issue is feedback is not immediate. I can really screw up my body all the while thinking how good I am doing. Only to learn later in the day or night how badly I goofed up. I think we know where to be most careful in the pool when I get back.
I wish good luck to everyone in their personal journey and recovery.

I have been in a wheelchair since I was 21. (36) years. I have tried everything almost there is out there for nerve painas i feel likuntil I learned to just it out and takelittle hydrocodone 10 and diladid 4mg pills as needed until recently. I talked to a doctor at a wound clinic about a spinal block for pain and he recommended Lyrica. I tried some free samples and it worked some. I then called Lyrica and they said it work better if I was using proper dosage. They have ran clinical trials on hundreds of people and found 300mg as the best. I have had little pain aND used no pain pills. I am to use 2 a day and most days use 1 pill. I hope this helps you as I feel like I have found my answer to pa in management.
Do the severe nerve pain can cause neck cancer? Because my friend was suffering from this pain and later on he had a lump near the neck and it was malignant. Now, he has to go through the low dose rate radiation or surgery so that it can be cured.

leroymorris, I'm don't think nerve pain causes cancer, it does seem almost everything else does. Pain is a great warning system, it may have been reacting to the nerve being pressed on from the lump. Many types of cancer can go into remittance for many years after treatment, I hope the best outcome for your friend.

Neck pain can occur due to several other reasons. You must visit a doctor and get it diagnosed. leroymorris,
Why is it that to get anything done you have to ask your regular Dr for a referral? It boggles my mind that if you are in constant pain you have to ask for the right to see a specialist in pain management. I asked my Dr this question, " Why haven't you refered me to someone about my pain?"he told me , " because you haven't asked". Is our medical system really this screwed up?

Your particular doctor is following insurance guidelines rather than trying to help you, his patient. I hope he has other virtues.

I know right, when he was told what was wrong with me he had to look it up because he had never even heard of my condition. That is another reason why I went to Mayo Clinic. They told me that they weren't surprised by my Dr not knowing about it, because it is very rare. And that my Dr did the right thing in that he followed the protocol as to what a Dr is supposed to do. I know that I had never heard of it before either, I guess I was expecting that a Dr would of at least heard of it. My expectations were to much I guess. I have found a pain clinic that has two Dr's that have dealt with my condition. I checked online for a day or two to find them, they are at a facility where my Dr is, he didn't even know that the other Dr's had dealt with this before. I had to find them myself and then have my Dr give me a referral. It wasn't easy to find them simply because I again would have thought that if any Dr's at the facility where my Dr is that my Dr would have been able to tell me that. Again I expected to much. I'm sorry about this rant, however it does help me to deal with this. I guess that I expect to too much from Dr's. I do wonder why they go to school so long and know so little. Oh geezer, there I go ranting again.
