Not being able to have a bowel movement due to constipation sucks. Why should we increase stool softeners or laxatives when there are natural solutions! Here are some 'natural' stool softeners and some facts on constipation.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO RELIEVE CONSTIPATION:
- TAKE A FIBER SUPPLEMENT. - EAT MORE VEGGIES. - USE ACIDOPHILUS. - ELIMINATE ALLERGENIC FOODS. - CONTROL STRESS WITH THE RIGHT SUPPLEMENTS AND EXERCISE LIKE TAI CHI OR YOGA. - DRINK 8 GLASSES OF WATER DAILY - AVOID REFINED WHITE FLOUR PRODUCTS - EAT PRUNES
DID YOU KNOW? (CONSTIPATION FACTS)
- LONG TERM USE OF LAXATIVES CAN CAUSE FURTHER CONSTIPATION. - UNDIAGNOSED FOOD ALLERGIES MAY PLAY A ROLE IN CONSTIPATION. - CONSTIPATION CAUSES YOU TO ABSORB TOXINS THROUGH THE INTESTINAL WALL THAT WOULD NORMALLY BE EXCRETED.
The following list of supplements can be used for preventing and treating constipation. Adult doses are given.
I take laxatives each night before the mornings I do my bowel routine (every night) but they wouldn't do much if it weren't for the other "natural laxatives/stool softeners" I consume. Everyday I have a fruit smoothie consisting of yogurt, ice, sometimes milk, fresh blueberries, strawberries, sometimes a banana and most importantly papaya & mangoes. It's an extremely healthy and tasty drink that serves many good purposes for our bodies but most importantly for the bowels. Feel free to add whatever fruit of your choice but the key ingredients are papaya and/or mangoes. Both these fruits are excellent natural stool softeners and will really help with bowel movements. Mangoes are tasty enough to its on its own so if you're not feeling a smoothie, have a few slices of mango! Try this once and you'll never stop doing it! Be sure to drink lots of water as well because without it, your body won't be able to digest all the fibers and in turn will make constipation worse. I also take probiotics and have found that its helped but again, make sure you drink lots of water!

I was put on softeners in the hospital. When I got home, well after a short time, my wife thought it might better to stay off the computer, I started reading about the meds I was on. All the side effects, one that I read, loss of bowel function, started me on the rountine of prune juice in the morning w/pulp, and lots of water, and more greens than a rabbit would eat. It helped and I stopped all the meds. I have relaxed my routine but I have regained some in that area so things are better. Nothing like that waiting for the next poop fear, but after three years, I've been lucky so far.
bill I'm assuming allergenic foods are those that people are highly allergic too but I'm not completely sure to be honest Here's some info I found on chlorophyll -
Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in plants. Plants use chlorophyll and light to make food. People use chlorophyll as medicine. Common sources of chlorophyll used for medicine include alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and silkworm droppings.
Chlorophyll is used for bad breath and reducing colostomy odor. A colostomy is a surgical opening made in the abdomen that allows intestinal waste to be collected in a bag. Chlorophyll is also used for constipation, “detoxification,” and wound healing.
Healthcare providers use chlorophyll intravenously for treating a pancreas problem called chronic relapsing pancreatitis.
Bioxy Cleanse is a unique colon cleanse formulated to detoxify and cleanse the gastrointestinal tract, colon, and arteries, thereby energizing the body, relieving constipation, enhancing weight loss and restoring an alkaline environment. Bioxy cleanse caps contain magnesium peroxide compound with oxygen (ozone) and vitamin C with bioflavonoid. Those supplementing with Bioxy cleanse feel re-energized and often experience relief from common digestive upsets such as bloating, nausea, and others. This is an ideal supplement for those with bowel concerns.
kilg0retr0ut I've also stopped the softeners I was put on in the hospital/rehab and only use laxatives now. You seem to have a great and healthy diet and I didn't know that loss of bowel function was a side effect! Maybe I should try getting off of it completely! I know that fear you're talking about, it's the worst! Especially if my bowel routine didn't go too well the last time

I went about about 2 weeks without one once, ( the week before my injury, then a week rehab, the day before I went home I had this lovely barium (spell check) enema. What a mess, anyway...I don't really have a BP, and I won't go into details, but please don't try or listen to anything I say or have done. I should have that for my signature. I have little knowledge of what I'm talking about most the time and would really hate to do someone wrong. That's why I'm here (to learn more).
kilg0retr0ut, it sounded pretty legit to me and does seem good for you! You know more than you think, trust me Maybe you're just being a ninja pretending like you don't know nothing

So little is known about CES. We are all here to learn and to share Kilg. I have been struggling with a bowel routine. Lately I have started using Magnesium. But I had been taking a laxative several times a week. That mango shake looks good. I may try it.

I just finished a smoothie with mango, blueberries and a banana. I threw in a little sweet and low. I used about a quarter of a mango. Is that is about what is recommended DJ? This is an excellent way to get fiber and blueberries have an antioxidant. Many of my CES friends have great things to be said about bananas. And I used Greek yogurt to throw in a little protein.
DJ, this is a great list! A little tip given to me by my son's pediatrician: all fruits and vegetables starting with a letter "p" are good source of fiber to make you go! My son had these problems so we had a lot of papaya, plums, peaches, pears, blended with yogurt....easy too remember and it works :-)
ladylimpsalot, I'm sorry to hear that you've been having troubles with your BR's but I'm glad that you've made a smoothie! For one person a quarter of a mango sounds good. If you like more go ahead and add more, it can only do more good than bad! It's great for the bowels and our health in general for sure. Let us know if you notice any improvements with your bowel routines (it might take a couple of days to get into your system)!
Thanks theone, and that's a great and easy tip for us all to remember! Next time I need to shop for fruits I'll keep the "p's" in mind!
