This is a hot topic for me. Obviously, there needs to be two types of tags, one for mobility needs that require extra space (with the lines) for loading assistive device and/or getting damaged body out of car, and one for those who cannot walk long distances from parking to store but can exit car within normal space. That will never happen, and ABs will also continue to use the tags of disabled family members/friends for convenience.
Don't get me started wavewolf, it's my pet hate. We have so many inconsiderate so and so's in this town, I'm so so so over this bad and lazy behaviour.
Common and frustrating issue indeed! If there are no accessible parking spots I end up getting dropped off infront of wherever I'm going and the have my parents or whoever park the van in a non-accessible spot. As annoying as this is, I can see how it's much worse for independent people who have no assistance.
I am normally a temperate and tolerant person. But this issue just gets to me so badly. It is hard enough to get out of my inaccessible house, loaded into the car, and ready for my task. Then to not find parking and have to go home with task undone is so frustrating. When I force myself to park far away and wheel or walk beyond my capacity, I pay for days for the excess.

This is exactly why people should be ashamed who take these parking spaces
My husband gets more mad at people then I do about people parking in the handicap spaces without a placard.
Once we went to our local grocery store and we parked in a regular space because the lot was pretty empty with a lot of available spaces close to the doors. He noticed the car parked in the handicap space and made a mental note. He went to take pictures of the car and license plate. The owner exited the store while he was doing this and he laid it down! The owner apologized and said her son has a placard and it was not in her car but the son with the disability was not there. She got into her car and my husband came back in and told me the story. The owner came back in the store feeling really bad about the whole thing and kept apologizing until we told her not to park there unless she has the placard and her son with her.
There was a sting operation done at one of the NFL events (I think the Oakland Raiders stadium) and they found a lot of people abusing placards and even using their dead relatives placards. They ended up issuing tickets resulting in a ridiculous amount of owed money. I wish I had the link. It was great to hear it.
I also read a post on reddit one day where someone asked why disabled people have placards if they do not have a wheelchair The poster got all kinds of answers uninhibited people have no idea or thought about being disabled unless you actually have some apparent device. I get called out for trying to have a "gangsta limp" by random people kind of annoying. I also got called out as drunk by a police officer and had to take a breathalyzer test because it was late at night and I was walking differently than a sober person would At an even where I asked the parking attendant if there was handicapped parking, he asked back "So how handicapped are you?" The event in a building that was up a long winding hill path and stairs from where the parking lot was
dstrangio & wavewolf, I can't believe you two got detained like that! What'd they end up saying to you once they realized that you weren't intoxicated?!
Two different tags would be great!. I also have issues arguing with people who park next to me in the cross lines. they definitely need Wheelchair parking only. I would park anywhere but people always have to park tight to your doors. I can't fit thru with the chair. I have never seen anyone police handicap parking in my area in Northeast , Pa. hopefully someday life will get easier. Best to all!

I was coming out of a jazz club, no drinking there. But I had been sitting a while and was very unsteady coming down stairs. Before I got my gait going (canes and braces), I was staggering. It is an area where there are many bars, and police look for those not fit to drive. So I did not take offense. I pissed them off when I laughed (nicely) as they asked me to walk a straight line. Of course I failed, and was given a portable breathalyzer test. Finally, seeing me load my legs into car with hand controls and handicapped license plate, they muttered "you're OK" and left me to drive home. I'd rather go through this than have someone drive drunk and injure or kill a person--lost my fiance to drunk driver.

That's true wavewolf, it's one of the few useful things that they actually do. I'm very sorry to hear about your fiancé.
