davincidanes, quality of life is a major benefit to be reckoned as you evaluate the risks of meds. Sounds like a good appt today.
Are you to use cane for support or for balance? Either way, I strongly suggest forearm cane/Canadian crutch/Lofstrand crutch as an alternative to straight cane with handle. At least try some, getting them properly adjusted. Using them in pairs when you do not have Maestro assisting is best for proper gait and posture. If primarily for balance, a single forearm cane is still far superior to a regular cane--you can actually correct your position safely and securely. And excellent version that is very affordable is this: millennialmedical.com/shop/forearm-crutch. These are fully adjustable, have comfortable handgrip, are not too heavy, have spring-loaded tip (protects shoulders), have very long-lasting, most secure articulated tips, and have ergonomic angle on handle (protects wrists). They are only sold in pairs, but if you have to walk a long way, even after Maestro is trained, using pair is superior to single. You can have leash attached around your waist to him, have him walk on loose leash beside you and be available as needed for picking up stuff, getting up and down, etc. Forearm canes can be hung off arm without have to find a place to stash them when you need to use your hands, convenient. I think of my canes as my "primate arms" since they touch the ground!!! They feel like an extension of my body, and are short enough to fit easily into car. I use mine for support and balance, with leg braces. Now I use my wheelchair for most excursions, but my canes at home because my house is not accessible.
What harness are you using on Maestro? If there is a Ruffwear Webmaster in his girth, this works very well for mobility and is comfortable for dogs. I used these in search and rescue in late 1980s, and still using now for mobility service work!
DJ, Totally understood, DJ, but right now I am so freaking miserable that I'll try anything for some pain relief. The doses of Baclafen & Gabapentin that I'm taking right now are so low that they aren't doing much good. I hate the idea of narcotic meds again,... I was on them for 7 years steady after my injury back in 1995... and aonly on & off low dose for acute periods, so I'm quite familiar with the pros and cons. I just really want to have some quality of life back, if possible. I surely appreciate everyone's support and good thoughts.
davincidanes that's completely understandable. We have a lot of great threads on natural medications on here, you could also give those a try to see if any of that helps!

Oh, thanks! I ordered a cane last night. Just keeping it "simple", although stylish for now. I did get one with a small tri-pod base for better stability. I will start there, and work my way into what my "needs" really are as I as I figure them out. Not ready for a forearm crutch or two yet. Information overload! LOL So I already have a "backpack" vest for Maestro. I've had it for years, because I've had dogs in the past (Maestro's great-grandfather the first) that have carried my "stuff" on occasion. For his serious service work, I did modify it a bit. I moved the chest strap down so that it rests at his chest level, and put those fuzzy seatbelt cover things on the front strap for extra padding. I went to the Ruffwear website, and they have some really nice stuff... but here is my problem. Their Large/XLarge size fits a chest circumference of 41" maximum. Maestro's chest is already 40" and he is not even close to stopping growing. His chest has not dropped yet! Yikes. Here's a pic of him in his back-pack. I'm also throwing in a picture of his daddy who has a MASSIVE chest, and I expect the same on this baby boy by the time he is 3 years old. LOLOL! Love his sire... his name is Sawyer. What a hunk!
Unfortunately Scar tissue is a major problem in our bodies. Even though it is supposed to protect it also blocks regeneration and some healing. I have a ton in my body too causing all source of havoc. It is definitely a problem with all of us who have gone into major surgeries and our causes of injury. I feel for you and hope you can find a way to deal with the pain. I try to deal the best I can but I too have some major bad days and tend to want to be alone. We all have a very challenging life to get by with everyday. All I can say is stay positive, keep smiling and pray for hope and our well being. I wish you well. Best Regards, Joe
Thank you, Joe. I know exactly how you feel about those "bad days". I'm having way to many of them right now. I do feel better now that I saw my Neuro yesterday. She is such a supportive person. And she loves me because my case is so "interesting and unusual". LOL I told her that if something weird was going to happen, it's going to happen to me. LOL! Thanks for the kind words.
I am glad its working out with your Neuro. I feel its very hard for many doctors. They understand Spinal cord injuries, many diseases and Neuro problems we all have. We can all have the same issue but we are so different and complex in our bodies and condition. I see it a lot how someone can be a T-10 complete like me but there condition and problems are either far worse or for the better. I wish you well and glad you have some piece of mind. Hope you feel better and have a great weekend. Best Regards, Joe

You must be using the cane for balance point only, then. Sometime try out a forearm cane when you have the chance, although what you normally see in a DME store is not the best.
Sawyer is really well built! Maestro's color is more beautifully distributed, IMHO. I was afraid that the Ruffwear might not be large enough... I use my Webmaster for basic mobility need, and when I want Jamin to carry stuff, I use an Approach Pack (basically the same but with large pockets). Glad you already had a nice pack for him. Good modifications that you made!

Yes, wavewolf,, the cane is for balance thus far. I don't have it yet, just ordered it a couple of days ago. I practiced with a yardstick and was amazed at the difference that it made. I hadn't felt that "stable" for over a year! Can't wait to get the real thing here to try it out.
You are also right about the dogs. Maestro is better marked than his father is, who is considered "heavy-marked" for a harlequin dane. He is, however, an American, International, and Canadian Champion. He was also an Award Of Merit Winner at our National Specialty, which is a BIG deal. LOL!

Hope the cane will work even better for you. But, do try to maintain good posture--the tendency is to lean on one side, supporting more than intended, and thus put the body out of alignment.
I so wish that you will be able to show Maestro! He is true champion--beautifully marked, well built, stable temperament, and intelligent. He will be your champion no matter what!
