I carry nifedipine with me incase of extremely high BP
Is this drug effective for control of acute high blood pressure, as with AD? Or do you have to take it regularly to work?
It's a quick acting drug and should only be used as the last resort (prior to going to the hospital) if necessary. I've never had to use it so far and I hope I won't ever have to!
I hope not, either! The reason I asked is that I thought that nifedipine was used as pretreatment for AD in special cases (before sex) or taken regularly to control high BP in general. I had only heard of nitroglycerin being used for AD in emergency.
As L3 is my worst lesion on spinal cord, I didn't think I was at risk for AD. But I have lesser lesions throughout cord, and in brain. I experienced what ER staff called AD when I as stricken with a norovirus, became suddenly and extremely dehydrated, and bladder and bowels went haywire: symptoms were elevated BP (not extreme, but in danger zone) and very slow pulse, unique pounding headache, and extreme sweating around shoulders and above. They gave me sublingual nitroglycerin and IV fluids.
Maybe a smaller dosage can be used as pretreatment but I've never heard of it.
wavewolf based on what I've read from members on here I'm sure there are types of autonomic dysreflexia for the different injury levels. What you experienced does indeed sound like it was AD. I think nitroglycerin is last resort if someone ended up in the hospital due to AD.
I look after a ventilated quad and he's very much the same with AD. He can be a little high when he is still in bed, but once up he can be quite low. He keeps at a good average by ensuring his cares are kept thorough. When it elevates then we know he is unwell or in pain somewhere. But it does come down to a good routine and good cares for a person that has a high level of injury.

You're absolutely right, it really does come down to the care/caregiver! My parents and nurses are my primary caregivers and they all do an excellent job so I normally don't encounter any issues.
hello when i do my exersise some time wife help me stand but i almost fall down ! when i was go physiotharpy i use frame and stand and fall down. my bp verry low so it is hard for me to stand !
I get this when I use a standing frame; solution is to make sure you're properly hydrated and use an abdominal band. I could manage about a minute without it and can stand happily for an hour or so without.

Great suggestion harry! I used an abdominal binder when I was in rehab but decided to stop using it after I was discharged because I felt that it was too restrictive and it also left marks on my body.

My dad takes nifedipine (brand name procardia) daily and has for many years. No SCI/AD but he has a condition called Prinzmetal's Angina where he gets spasms in the blood vessels randomly and it can feel like a heart attack.
I have a genetic connective tissue disorder called EDS with neuro complications

Are there any known side effects to using nifedipine lin?
I'm sure there are side effects, every medication has possible/known side effects. My dad hasn't had any issues with long term use, and its been at least 20 years now that he's been on it. Would have probably been on it even longer if the prinzmetals had been diagnosed correctly sooner. It works very well for him, and he feels absolutely awful if he misses a dose. I would assume he takes a smaller dose daily than the type thats used for acute AD.
