DJ , the difference is the procedure I'm having is they just cut the bowel and divert one end to the outside and close off the other end and the big one they cut the bowel divert to the outside and then actually remove the remainder down to the anus from what I understand. That's it in a very lay mans way of explaining it. Hope that makes sense. I don't want the big one lol.
p.s the big one is NOT reversible as with they option I'm going with it is.
I had a friend who lived in a wheelchair as a result of contracting polio in the late 1950s. Later in her life, an operation prompted the necessity of an ostomy. She was devastated. By the time she was well enough to be "re-routed" (you can have it switched back), she had decided to keep it. And she kept it until her death from pneumonia years later. I dare say it changed her life. It reduced the number of times she was in and out of her chair on any given day -- and her upper body strength wasn't great. You mentioned that you wanted it for a better quality of life. Isn't that what everyone wants? Great quality of life? Personally, I think you're making the best decision. Notice I didn't say right or wrong. I think it will give you a new lease on life that you will more than welcome. Good luck. I wish you the very best.
From all the people I have spoken to, read about who have had it done, none have had it reversed, and 100% say they wish they'd had it done years ago. I think it's a huge return to a quality of life jhlnyny

Oh ok that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the clarification. I think this is going to be great for you!
Well it's done now, it has made a huge difference to my daily life, no more BM yay. The down side is a lot of discomfort for a week or two, not pain just discomfort. It's six weeks now I feel 100% better and the stitches and a thing called a rod, it keeps the stoma from going back inside, come out on Wednesday. Have had a few leakage issues but they seem to have been fixed now. It will be a lot better when when the stitches and rod come out and the stoma nurse can decide what bag is best for me. Any questions about this surgery, please feel free to ask me about it. All I can say now is that it has changed my life, no more two hours sitting on the toilet and worrying about accidents, that s all a thing of the past.

Welcome back Butiki! I'm glad to hear that everything went well and that you're feeling better. Keep us updated with how everything is going. I'm looking forward to seeing your posts again
Well four months on since my colostomy surgery, and it's the best thing \I have done since my injury. I now have a life and no living in fear about having an accident. No pain and once you get used to the bag you don't even think about it. If anyone has any colostomy question please don't hesitate to ask me here or PM me if you prefer.
Butiki, I'm so glad you are happy with the outcome. I hope I won't need one, but hearing that yours was successful and improved your quality of life makes me feel better about my own future. I've read that the tape on ostomies causes skin issues. How have you been with that?
I would really make this. But my Professor told me, I need the Ileostomy. So the decision is much harder (cause Ileostomy is not easy to handle over the day). Best wishes !
Hi, I am new here. I got a colostomy 2 years ago and it was the best decision I made but it still comes with the problem with the wafer not always creating a good seal resulting in leaks other than that they're great and will defiantly improve your quality of life. Good luck!
