My son is 11 yrs in with a sci, T7 to T10. his problem is when he wears a comdom cath he can only wear it for up to 5 hours before he starts to feel sick. I am worried that this is something that can harm him or that something is wrong. I also think that he tapes the cath on too tight, as he has had it come off he makes sure it will not. My son has not come on the forums but says it is ok if I do!!!!
any ideas as to what we can do, I think he should see a urologist.
Hi mom101, and a big welcome. I'm sure that one of our male folk will be along soon. But seeing that you are brand new here, I just wanted to welcome you.

Private message me, I can probably help you with this, but probably not a subject to be discussed in a public thread.
There are so many questions and answers. i ain't no medic so i can only talk on personal experience. i intermit cath 5 times a day. not to leak in between i do a botox procedure every 8 months. Hence no need for a condom cath or leg bag. I am a T11 complete.
I've always wondered why people call condoms catheters. Catheters are completely different to sheaths or condoms. The sheath I use is called clear advantage. It's self-adhesive and clear. There is a knack to putting it on, but once it is stuck it usually stays in place. I change it every 24 hours. They very rarely drop off. They come in all sizes. The company is called Coloplast. I cannot understand why condoms make your child feel sick. Who advised him to have condoms in the first place? Perhaps you need to consult your doctor, or preferably a urologist as you suggest. There is so little in your post to go on. Perhaps you could update us, and maybe tell us a little bit more about yourself in your profile. Without knowing what country you come from, it's difficult to give specific advice. You say your son is "11 years in with spinal injury". By that I imagine you mean he has been injured for 11 years. How old is he?
Regarding taping it on too tightly that's a mistake I made early on. Like your son, I had a couple condom caths fall off and I thought that was the solution. When I would take it off at the end of the day, the friction eventually caused sores at the base of my penis. That, incidentally, was one of the few times I was thankful for the diminished sensation. Here's what I suggest: (1) try a few different brands of condom catheters and make sure they fit properly (I really like the Rochester "spirit" caths) (2) use smith and nephew skin prep wipes they'll help keep the cath on.
As for the "sick" feeling your son gets, that's troubling. I'm sure you've heard of autonomic dysreflexia. It sounds as if your son might be experiencing it. I have two thoughts on what might be causing it. First, it might be the fact that he's taping on the caths too tightly. Second, his bladder isn't draining completely while he's wearing it.
Whatever the case may be, he needs to go see a urologist (you should request a urodynamics test). Also, before you go to the urologist, perhaps you should try having him tape it on more loosely and see if that helps.
thanks for all the feed back. to start my son is 32 now. He never did go to a urologist and we just picked out a comdom cath on our own. His problem is his urine trickles out when wearing the cath. so I think, as does my son, that is why he feels sick after wearing it for hours.
Now I have to work on getting him to see the right Dr. My son is moving on with life now and has a girlfriend!!!! I could not be happier. I, we want to get to a place where my son can work and not have to worry about this problem. My son started out doing volunteer work and then worked part-time until the job moved away. Now he wants to have a place on his own and will need money to do that, $460.00 a month is not enough to do anything. I do not know how people make it on total disability mom101,vintage,kilg0retr0ut,nathanau,delboy,mikeq,stephend, I want to thank everyone of you for responding. It is hard to share such private information and I am so grateful this site is here for all of us.

We are in the U.S.A. I guess the biggest problem is we have been on our own for this whole situation, we never had a Dr. suggest anything since the hospital but self cathing. My son was in the hospital 30 days, no insurance.
My son is a complete T7 to T10. We pick out a cath and called the company worked with them on what to get and that was that. He is so frustrated and so am I, I just have to get him to go to the Dr. there is no reason for him to struggle so much with this. I just hope there is something better for him. He wants to have a job so bad and to get out more.
With the T7 injury your son is unlikely to get dysreflexia, so you could probably rule that out as a source of sickness. It could be that his bladder is not emptying fully. If his urine dribbles out, does he walk or is he confined to a chair? His urine might drain better if he pushes himself up in his chair, straightens his body. I find it helps me to push up as high as I'm able. It allows the urethra to straighten, which lessens the resistance to the bladder and aids the flow of urine. He definitely needs to see a urologist and perhaps have a urodynamics test, which ascertains whether the bladder muscle contracts and drains fully. At the very least he should have an ultrasound test on his bladder to see how much urine retention there is, if any. I hope all this helps.
