I'm comtemplating moving from Miami, FL to Greenville, SC area.
Anyone from there? How's the care? How's the medicaid process? Are there a decent amount of caregivers there to hire. In Miami I get 35 hours of paid care a week by aides I get to chose & hire. Does anyone else get that elsewhere? I only found out about it like a yeaR Or so ago.....applied got it. I had the choice of an agency or picking my own caregivers which I prefer. Supplies are a battle but 3/4 covered This is a big move but only want to move if I can get good care. Also how rough is changing climates?
welcome miamigrl71, it sounds like you should stay right where you are, I don't believe anyone has the care you have. my suggestion don't with it because you'll lose it. I live in CA and I get no caregiving and have to pay a lot for my supplies.
Wow I thought Cali was suppossed to have great benefits and care......
its the great Obamacare that I have to deal with now, I have been accepted for medicare or Medicaid, whatever its called, start on that 12/01/2017. I still have to pay for that also, but hopefully not too much.

I am on medicare and now full medicaid.....but I was injured at 18 and after that only worked 7 years ish , so I have nothing , own nothing etc. Maybe that's why......
I don't have much either, live off ssi benefits, lots of debt in student loans, healthcare in America is pretty horrible considering we should have at least close to the best.

Curious and undecided, MG
I would be scared to move right now with all that is going on in politics. It might be better to keep the benefits that you have now instead of having to apply from them again because of a move to a different state.
Sam, it may be possible to get your student loan forgiven by sending them a letter that you obtain from social security saying that you are permanently completely disabled. But be sure to deal directly only with the legitimate fafsa.ed.gov website, not the jillion of other people who want to "reduce your debt"...and who will call you for the rest of your life if you ever talk to them.
The hours of aide care you get are (most likely) through a Medicaid HCBS waiver. Different states use and prioritize the waivers differently, and for many states there’s a waiting list for services - you can qualify all the ways there are but you get no services until either your state increases Medicaid $, the Feds increase Medicaid funding or attrition - enough people no longer need services that it becomes your turn. I’ve heard of waits as long as 11 years. It’s worth spending some time on the phone to find out what and how you would qualify for in SC or wherever.
Also, I suggest that you look into regional paratransit wherever you go. Miami and Dade and Broward counties actually have a lot of public transportation which means paratransit is pretty widely available. The rural southeast and southwest? Not so much.
I agree Vintage........I likely won't be going .........My brother for some reason wants to move there and I'd love out of hurricane alley but theres the cold, no medical marijuana in sc & I can't risk losing my benefits or access to great health care esp. since he's looking not at a central city.

I lost part of my coverage in January of this year, and only now have I made it back up to the top of the list to be re-considered. It's not that other places don't have "care", it's that there are waiting lists to get that care,...and newcomers will most likely have to start at the bottom.
FWIW - some states (ie, where I am) don’t have waiting lists for HCBS services, once you’re eligible - but you do start over at the bottom of the list. Medical University of SC is kind of the hub for SCI stuff in the state.
Vintage, did the dissolution of DARS affect services/service coordination? I know the folks I know in and around Houston and Katy were concerned.

well that makes sense in my case, it took me 2 years to get accepted for medi-care(?), even though I had enough proof to show I wasn't trying to take advantage of it fraudulently. all my family members were amazed that I wasn't covered by medi-care(?). services here in California are horrible, and it is because there are too many people here and waiting lists are long so care suffers immensely. maybe I should move to somewhere where there isn't so many people, like Alaska. wonder how medical services are there? way too cold for me.
