I am sure that there is great skill in shooting in a hunt situation but I find it so difficult to not think of the beautiful animal that lost its life.
shooting deer is fine if you need the meat but I disagree with killing animals for sport. It seems such a senseless act to kill a living creature just for fun, to prove how good you are at shooting a rifle. Maybe I live in the wrong country to comment. Some places are so vast, huge areas of wilderness filled with wild beasts, so killing might be necessary in order to live a more comfortable life. Before my injury I belonged to a rifle club. This was before the tragedy of Dunblane, where Thomas Hamilton killed 16 school children. Firearms were banned from that moment. My point is that I was happy firing my rifle at targets and competing against others. Whether I would have gone out and killed any deer or not, had I lived in the wilds, I do not know. anyway WcHunter, that looks a fine specimen of deer you have there. should give you many weeks of food, plenty of grub for cold winter nights
I'm another animal lover. It hurt me so bad when I first saw the beautiful deer who had lost it's life that I didn't comment earlier. I do eat meat. My feelings against killing for sport mirror those of Mikeq above.
Wchunter- Don't take the 'beautiful animal ' comments personally. I agree your kill is beautiful and know you will enjoy some fine meals. I think a civilization that judges the practices and diet of 100,000 years of human history dislikes humans at least as much as it likes animals. Strange times.
I step in the water, but the water has moved on...
I just hit a deer with my pickup 2 weeks ago. My thought is the more people out hunting and killing deer means less stupid deer to be causing damage on the roads. I congratulate you on your successful hunt. I like the fact you went old school with a muzzleloader.
tetra, I think that the comments have been very fair and non judgemental. It is natural to comment when something incites an emotive reaction but with all due respect, the reaction is just as valid as the posters right to be pleased with his shooting skill.
Deers are very beautiful animals and I accept that hunting exists, im not extreme in my viewpoint but merely stating my thoughts. wchunter, my comments are by no means undermining your achievement, that is not my intention.
Hunting has to be done to control the population of deer, duck, goose and I am sure other animals. In Minnesota the deer population has increased, and the amount of people hitting them and dieing in an auto accident has increased. Most are killed to eat. Although now all deer killed in this state are being tested for a disease being passed around in the herd dieing by wasting away. Not the way any animal should die. This herd thinning has to be done
www.legendsofamerica.com/ky-cumberlandgap.html "...Long before white men entered "Ken-ta-ke," a magic word among the Indians, the Cherokee and the Shawnee traveled through the Cumberland Gap along a game trail later called the “Warriors' Path” by white emigrants.
Though neither tribe lived in Kentucky, both would travel the path in and out of the area, which was used as hunting grounds. Its fertile grazing lands teemed with vast herds of buffalo, deer, and smaller game. Cherokee hunters from the south, and other tribes from north of the Ohio River, also visited the region to vie for its rich prizes. Bloody clashes frequently occurred between the tribes as they competed for the area game."
Thanks all for your replies. I have learned not to take personally those who views are different than mine. Its not the "shooting," that earned me the privilege of providing my family with fresh meat, its all of the hours and time involved, not to mention the effort of getting to a stand, that gave me the advantage. The majority of individuals without a disability has no idea of how difficult and time-consuming it is to get dress in the mornings, esp when you're "layering" your clothes to prepare for the cold temps, or to maneuver a small rise in terrain, to have to get in and out of your truck to open/close a gate. Sometimes I wonder why i punish myself, but when I'm in the woods and the sun begins to rise, and the woods, "come alive," I'm reminded of the beauty that awaits. Not wanting to cause a division, or start an argument, but if the public saw what goes into processing animals for consumption, ie, Cows, Hogs, Chickens, goats, etc, maybe there would be a change of heart.

I have heard that if we didn't have deer hunters that the deer would become quite overpopulated.
Wchunter, I am impressed at your perseverance to get out and hunt. Doing it from a chair seems almost impossible, since there are not paved sidewalks leading to a deer stand. So many people are against hunting or even owning a gun, not understanding the need to reduce the population.
I joined this site out of an opportunity to continue learning from others, hearing about their successes and failures, as well as the stories of their passions and pursuits. What I didn't expect was to be bashed for sharing one of my passions: hunting. Therefore, I dont need more drama, or darts thrown from those I dont know. If I dont agree with someones ideology, I usually just go about my business and ignore them. Consider this my last post and I hope everyone has a fulfilling life. And Lara, you can delete my account. Maybe Mikeq can rest better.
