looking for info regarding credit card debt for disabled folks. when I was injured I had a few thousand in credit card debt, not able to work and now being sued by credit card company. does anyone have any tips on this? I could do bankruptcy but don't want to. don't really trust the debt consolidation industry either.
I do personal finance and would suggest try consolidation. depending on the other debt you have, your payments stay the same but just a little longer to pay off at a much lower interest rate.
debt consolidation industry is definitely scammed. All I can offer is that talking directly to the card agencies can get some forgiveness.
Not so sure i agree with you were. some companies have individuals like myself that sit and explain finances and help people to get out of debt at no cost to the individual. consolidation its just adding debt together for lower payments and in most cases lower interest.
Senior citizens can call here. But I see you are too young for this, Sam. www.huffingtonpost.com/terry-savage/debt-relief-for-seniors-d_b_12107518.html “...National Foundation for Credit Counseling at 800-388-2227, a number that will connect them to the nearest local office of this trusted nonprofit. There they can get free or inexpensive counseling, or enter a debt repayment program in which creditors agree waive late fees, lower finance charges and accept a lower payment, which is made through the agency.”
For younger people, like you, there may be something helpful in this link. confinedtosuccess.com/disability-and-credit-card-debt/ The link contains this advice, which you have already mentioned - “Please note that debt management is an industry rife with scams so before signing on with a company, make sure to properly vet them!“
I haven't talked directly to them because wasn't sure how to handle because of injury, I couldn't pay them more than $40/month and owing them more than 10k balance now with all added penalties and fees makes it difficult, and no assets either, bankruptcy might be only way to get out?

reg79, may I ask what company u worked for or a company u recommend that I may use?
A kind-hearted free bankruptcy lawyer could do wonders for you. Those are rare, but I found one in the past. I think that when they see that you’ve done everything you could to be responsible, some allow their human kindness to kick in. Best wishes.

If they cannot help enough they will say so. The benefit of talking to them is they might be able to stop ringing up fees and penalties. It is often in their interest to do so. Better to find out. And courage is such a manly thing!
I step in the water, but the water has moved on...
A lawyer can advise which is the better strategy on an individual basis,...whether a bankruptcy or a repayment plan with the credit card company. Once a person talks to the credit card company about his repayment problem and enters into an agreement, this could make doing a bankruptcy impossible,...or almost impossible, even if the bankruptcy would have been the better choice.
