Cauda Equina is little understood at the best of time. I personally always refer to Cauda Equina Syndrome as a Spinal Cord Injury and yet i have also observed it being referred to as a Spinal Condition.
I think this is a good discussion point as i think there needs to be more clarity about this issue. I recently watched a video presentation by Dr. Havton, a leading scientist in this type of injury and he clearly refers to Cauda Equina Syndrome as a Spinal Cord Injury which i was very pleased to hear
What are your thoughts?..
This poll and discussion is open to all, not just those with Cauda Equina Syndrome...It will be interesting to hear everyones viewpoint on this
Thankyou emma..i agree that it is too. The damage is too the nerves from the Spinal Cord and how we are left symptomatic (from my understanding) is dependent on several factors, such as causation of injury, degree of nerve damage and severity how much the cord is compressed.
Thankyou for registering with us emma..please feel free to browse the whole forum and post an intro...we hope to see you around

To be honest I can't remember how he explained it. The cauda equina is a bundle of nerves outside the cord. He also explained that axons can no longer enter the cord. I'll see if I can find the post. Sorry, my mind is cluttered right now.

Dr Havton..who is a leading scientist in this field makes clear reference and understanding that it is in fact a Spinal Cord Injury in every sense of the word.
I was relieved to watch the video and see how it is explained clearly as such. Sometimes, i feel those of us who suffer from Cauda Equina Syndrome are treated as a lesser injury and outside of the term Spinal Cord Injury but i want to challenge that thinking and show that we have spinal cord injuries.. no doubts.
The poll is an interesting starting point for this and I hope to change some ways of thinking and i may yet show this thread to Mr Wise Young lol, once it is established and maybe he will too watch the video and explain Cauda Equina Syndrome in this way too.
There is already too little confusion and understanding surrounding Cauda Equina Syndrome but i sure intend to change that..if only for our own form and guests

Hey Lara, I went back to CC to find that info. The new format was tough for me to sift through. Don't have time now, will look later. I'll watch you video, I'm not saying it isn't a spinal cord injury, I'm just saying that was how it was explained to me.
I've done some reading on cauda equina syndrome myself just out of curiosity and although the cauda equina isn't referred to as the spinal cord, it is indeed classified a spinal cord injury.
Look i know i dont have CES but my mate in rehab did and he was in pretty bad shape. I know what he's say cos he always said that his surgeon told him that his ruptured disc caused some serious mess on his spinal cord.
Hi , My Name is Annette , I'm Pretty new to this Forum & I was told By My neurosurgeon that it was a nerve injury . I had my actual Emergency surgery done by an Orthopedic Spine Dr. On sept.27,2011.& Diag.w/CES. I have a severe left foot drop , I now have a bladder stimulator implant , my back pain is so severe and my legs are weak . I really cannot walk to far , without getting pain going down both legs !
Hey brianna, welcome to the forum! I'm sorry to hear about your injury and all the pain you're experiencing. Is it getting better as time passes? What does the bladder stimulator do for you?
I really hope you feel better and start recovering more. We have many cauda equina syndrome members on here so if you have any questions at all, feel free to start a thread and ask
