I call it a spinal cord injury because it removes confusion in people's minds when they ask what it is that I have. However, I believe it is a spinal nerve injury because the nerves individuate and each have their own sheath at the cauda equina and they have characteristics similar to peripheral nerves. At this point they have a more individuated symptomogy due to the configuration of nerves that are damaged. Also if the sheath is preserved they regrow. So I believe it's a spinal nerve injury even though it's the same route of communication to the brain via the spinal cord. In my understanding this is why each of us has a uniquely individual but similar story. Which is also why it gets misdiagnosed!

Great point chrioli! I never quite understand why it isnt referred to as a spinal cord injury. The cauda equina nerves are attached to the spinal cord after all.

I am so sorry that you are going thru these legal hoops Laura. Mine is not CES, but the Spinal Cord Scarring from two injuries. My case involves my GP's failure to refer to a neurologist after being told for months about my pain and numbness symptoms. I spoke to an attorney today, who will take the case IF, I can get a letter from my new specialists stating that my GP actuibs were below the standard of medical care, and if prompt treatment would have resulted in a less severe outcome. < I'm sure it's just the first of the hoops I will have to crawl through, because I certainly can't "jump" - If he decides to take the case. I'm so glad that you are finally reaching a solution to your case. Good luck!

Cauda Equina is little understood at the best of time. I personally always refer to Cauda Equina Syndrome as a Spinal Cord Injury and yet i have also observed it being referred to as a Spinal Condition.
I think this is a good discussion point as i think there needs to be more clarity about this issue. I recently watched a video presentation by Dr. Havton, a leading scientist in this type of injury and he clearly refers to Cauda Equina Syndrome as a Spinal Cord Injury which i was very pleased to hear
What are your thoughts?..
This poll and discussion is open to all, not just those with Cauda Equina Syndrome...It will be interesting to hear everyones viewpoint on this
