Hi everyone! As you might have read in my introductory post, im a c7/t1 since 2006. My bowel routine incuded laxatives and enemas every other day. I was exhausted and psychologically drained, as I needed 100% help with my BM. (I apologize for my bad english). Anyway, last week, I tried Peristeen for the 1st time. The coloplast nurse told me I should try doing a BM every day for a week. I was excited because it was the first time I felt I could get my life back : I was able to insert the catheter, pump in the water, etc. VERY HAPPY. However, today is my last day of THE WEEK, the nurse said and Im not sure about the results. The 2nd day, the balloon was pushed out -and there was some success. Other days, nothing.. or some water. Is it too early? I get the feeling that it does help with pushing the stool down but doesnt finish the job by actually "expelling" the stool. Any tips/ideas?
will I have to do digi-checks all the time? Ive never done it on my own & am a bit terrified. Plus dont know if ill be practically able to do it.
I use a vinyl glove, never latex. I keep a tiny jar of olive oil beside my box of gloves. It is for the purpose of lubrication. I put a glove on my right hand and dip the fingertips iof the glove n the olive oil. Then I insert the lubricated gloved finger into my rectum, pulling it slightly to the side. At T9, I can push a little, though not enough to completely expel everything. Then I digitally remove what’s left.

It takes a while for your body to adjust. At least a few weeks. Then it works great. You have to just play around with it until you really get how to use it. Make sure you drink a ton of water. If you don't,it won't work. I still take senna and miralax with it. Use warm water. I noticed that you inflate the baloon and hold it in place and don't move at all. Keep holding it while you pump all the water in. Any movement can cause it to leak so hold onto the cath. Wait about four minutes after the water is in if you can then remove. I have had it almost two years. It takes a while to get use to. Don't forget to stay hydrated. That is the number one cause of it not working. It prevents constipation but doesn't cure . if I am already constipated I try a suppository and then go back to the peristeen the next day.

kycrippled, Are you discussing adjusting to Peristeen?

kycrippled Thank you so much for all the info. Im now at day 1 of the “750ml every other day” week. The truth is I havent been drinking a lot of water lately as its getting colder and dont really feel like it. Plus imterm. cath. gets SO exhausting. Its not easy drinking all that water when you’re busy. But I know I should be drinking, no matter what. There’s always some water coming out during the pumping, but the nurse said it was normal. 🤔 Im not sure how Im going to manage holding the balloon in place while pumping, as I use a bench. I lay on one side, insert & inflate then sit back up on the toilet and pump. Maybe I should try pumping the water in while laying on the side?

My nurse said do it daily until you are getting good results and then go to every other day. Not sure as I use a commode and not a bench. I lean forward and reach under commode.i would try doing it all laying on bench. If you inflate then sit up and then pump it might not work because you have moved.thwt causes leaking.. I don't think it should be leaking though. Try pumping it slowly. As for the water I do as much as I can. Don't feel scared to do all of it.its just water and the more in the easier it comes out. Sometimes I do entire thing and don't even feel like the stool is all the way out and I do half the bag more and it does the trick. U have to do dig stem also. Initially a lot water will come out when you are ready to take cath out. Then try doing it ,more comes out and do it again a few more times. U have to take some type of laxative still. And yes if you don't drink a lot of water, the water you pump in absorbs in the dry stool and then the stool and the water won't come out and leaves you really bloated. At that point I would just try again until it comes out. It takes a while to get use to. Meaning how to do without leaking and tricks like that.

kycrippled Thank you so much for all the info & help! I’ll try both ways and see how it goes.
kycrippled, how is it working now? I am on peristeen 6 years. Stopped it for a while - but now, since my bowel accident last year, I do it every day. Some days good results. Some days more water - less stool.
Hi everyone I'm an L1 incomplete and still trying to find a BM program that works for me. Unfortunately my bowel management team and myself are finding that my bowel is reacting very negatively to all laxatives and we have essentially run out of options on them. They are now suggesting that I try the Peristeen system. If there is anyone out there with an injury in the Lumbar region using this system could you let me know if it eliminates the use for laxatives.
Another question has anyone tried doing the Keiger exercises on a vibration platform if so did you had any success at this improving control.
debbie352, have you tried any of the herbal laxatives? Cascara sagrada, Swiss Kriss, senna? Foods: Prunes, cooked okra. Flax seed oil. My body gets tired of using the same thing all the time, so I vary it. Milk of Magnesia is in the kitchen. I haven’t used it in years. I’ve even got some Turkish Rhubarb Root for if the others fail. I hated Miralax and Dulcolax, which were the only things they would give me in the hospital and nursing homes.
If you have a lump somewhere along your intestine, and it seems to stay there, take parasite killing herbs and use a SyncroZap,...or a cheaper version made by someone else.

Debbie, because you asked about the Keiger exercise, does that mean that you have some control in your pelvic area? I have a little push in my bowels but cannot do keiger exercises at all. If you do have a little push, a lot of sci people take magnesium citrate for their bowels, it helps keep stools soft. Myself I suffered from constant hard stools for many years and accidently found in the last few years that eating a handful of nuts each day keeps me softer. I tried many laxatives over the years and never found anything which didnt cause me terrible cramps. Keep persevering in finding what can help you
You mentioned a vibration platform, can you stand to be able use it? My daughter got me one for me last Xmas and I use it, I do pushups against the wall while standing on it
I've heard about peristeen for quite some time but now I'm actively doing some research so I can give it a go myself. Are you still using the system? Do you find it's working for you? pros/cons?

I know someone who uses peristeen. I will contact him to check this thread.

Many years ups and downs. But it was my fault. I was new in this things. I thought I can cheat and trick and do it on my way. So the first month it was great system. Then I thought: Hm, why dont use a 200 ml Klistier? So I did.
This was my big fault. I had no real strict routine. Then last year, August 2018, I was in a SCI hospital here in Ulm (one of the best in germany). And the nurses teached me to use Peristeen every day, same water (3 x 400-500ml). And after drinking a warm glas water in the morning.
After the SCI hospital a Bowel/Bladder nurse was on my side: Every week a phonecall and she asked if I am a good boy and make the routine.... She forget nothing. Every week. Since Jan this year she call me 1 x month. As reminder......
So: Yes I am happy with Peristeen now.
So if you are able to make a strict routine its very good. My routine:
Morning:
1 Coffee 200ml
1 Glass Water 200ml
1 Yogurt (125 ml) with 1.5 teaspoon Psyllium husk
4-5 Swedish oatmeal cookies
After 20-30 min I start with my great bowel routine.
3 rounds with 400-500ml water. And I dont wait too long.
The Peristeen throne session takes about 20 minutes.
I'm getting the doctor to give me approval/prescription today and will see how it goes. Asked the medical supply place if there was any kind of nurse I was supposed to go through but apparently there is none in BC, Canada! So I'm kind of on my own figuring it out other then reading info online and possibly getting some links to how to videos!
But let me get this clear, you do 3 x each time? So back to back filling/clearing/filling/clearing/filling/clearing in one go?! Why did you change up on the whole put it in - wait for 10-20 mins and then release? Just curious in the change in procedure since it sounds so different then what they recommend.
My issue is that I've been having to really eat a lot of fibre (My routine is late afternoon/evening) and then having a good go, but then SOMETIMES needing to go again 30-1 hour later. But if I don't fibre up it all becomes very inconsistent in time so then it's even MORE randomized. The strange thing is I never had this issue all throughout my late teens/20's but started having these issues once I turned about 34! Now I don't feel the same amount of confidence as I did before and also have a lot of embarrassing gas as well as super spastic legs. I know for certain though it's due to the large amount of fibre I eat, but I can't really avoid it if I have to do a Bowel routine :/ Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
I'm really hoping this helps my issue although I'm also worried about negative side effects with peristeen.
