I'm a C5 tetraplegic and live in New Zealand. We have a bill currently going through parliament that might allow me to qualify for assisted suicide. I'm not saying I'd take it up, life is pretty good right now to be honest, but I'm interested in what your thoughts are regarding the issue of assisted suicide for people like me? Thanks so much
Hi meesaclaire, I live just over the water from you. The assisted suicide bill has been passed in Victoria starting mid this year, there are strict conditions, but those conditions seem to be almost the same as the one about to go through your parliament.
I think this bill is a step forward towards people having control over how they wish to end their lives. I'm just surprised Australia has done something before NZ, you guys are normally the front runners as Aus. watches and learns from you
In the early 1940-ies Nazis killed thousands of physically and mentally ill persons calling it euthanasia. There are also statistics about what the German Reich would save on social costs through these murders. Google "Hartheim statistics" for further information, e.g. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hartheim_Euthanasia_Centre is a good link to start research.
I do not understand why some governments repeatedly pick up on the topic assisted suicide. In my opinion self-determined life looks different.
Be careful and do not let yourself be instrumentalized when the government wants to withdraw from responsibility.
Too bad that my English is so bad, but I still try it. :-) Google translate is not great, but I hope it is understandable what I want to say. There are no adequate words for the atrocities of Hartheim. But I think that's another topic. I am in favor of having the right to decide on my life and therefore on my death. If I only vegetate with pain and my life should only be made of torment, then I would like to have support to end this "life", which is no longer worth living.
Maybe this discussion should be continued in a forum for depression.
Yes, maybe you are right. Others may feel bad when talking about this topic.
I have no problem discussing this topic openly, as I find it very interesting and it does not (yet!) concern me. I absolutely feel that my life is worth living and go (for the most part) positively through life (I try very hard).
Grammatical errors are caused by the automatic translator.

I'm not sure how what happened at Hartheim has anything to do with laws changing in New Zealand?
I agree that self determined life is the way to go and governments are careful in how they word things but I think its a step forward for giving people a choice of how they wish to end their lives

Legalizing euthanasia is like opening Pandora's box.
The discussion about self-determined life and death has a very long history. I just want to point out that there could possibly be a conflict of interest between politics and the people affected.
Incidentally, I thought that this forum would dedicate itself to self-determined life previously. This thread drifted into the opposite.
Thank you all for taking the time to reply, I respect all of your opinions and know it is a highly emotive issue. Arohanui (much love)
I think its good to discuss topics like this, everyone has a difference of opinion, it doesnt make one person right and another wrong, its why there has to be discussion so that democracy rules.

Oh I dont disagree with you there hence why there has to always be careful consideration of everything surrounding it. I think though steps should always go forward in exploring what can be done for quality of life. I personally wish I could never die, I love life and would love to be around for hundreds of years to see how the human race evolves but I know there are others who don't feel like I do and I also know that because I am in control of my own thoughts, I may not always feel this way. The thought of maybe dying in die in pain and not in control also frightens me, hence why I would like to be able to choose how I die.

I'm curious to what your opinion is meesaclaire ,?
I was very pro assisted dying to be honest after my accident, then after a few attempts that didn't work, I had more neck surgery that went badly, had to quit my job as had no movement, you don't get a payout or anything in NZ so financially wasn't good, I was in a really bad space. Spent the year sleeping, reflecting on life, and now love my life, even though I'm more disabled. So I'm pretty worried that the proposed bill that includes disability will go through as I mentor a lot of young people with my injury that are also suicidal that would take it up. I just question why the criteria includes disability, I know I would have killed myself using the Bill and I'm just so grateful it wasn't around when I was so depressed. But yeah, worried for others who might be in a bad place with no support that kill themselves through the bill when I know, that sometimes, life can get better. For me, I'd like to see more support offered not the option of a state sanctioned death. I do understand both sides though, having been on both sides!
