ted303 , Since I live in a facility and it would be impossible for me to take care of things myself, I still have to rely on my caregivers. I continually seem to slip through the cracks. I was never seen by a stoma nurse. The plastic retaining clamp, which should have been taken out, wasn't. It finally came out on its own, recently. It is impossible for me to see my stoma, without my caregivers positioning a mirror so that I could see it.
As far as the excess gas. You may need to ask for assistance if it does not get easier for you with practice. Although, a method that I have heard that others use, is to take a pin and put three holes near the top. That is, of course, if you don't mind occasionally, smelling the gas. There are also ostomy bags that have a valve and a charcoal filter, I believe, I have not actually researched that myself because I am kind of at the mercy of the social facility.
Which, by the way, I am going to be moving to a new one today. I hope that we both are successful in our new leg of our journey.
OK! I'll be visualizing a serene and successful transition for you E Guy.

electricguy, hope the new facility will work out good for you, as with any change it takes time to adjust. Im currently trying the pin hole method, but as you say don't want to be stinking either. Its still early days for me too so it will take a while to get used of a method of releasing the gas. Overall it is working great so far anyway, once I have found the right balance between getting the gas released & still smelling of roses il be sorted.
Thanks for your help & advice. Best of Luck with the new facility

ted303,tetra,vintage, Well, I arrived at the new facility, in one piece. It was a very exhausting ride.
There are a few things that I am currently trying to get them to understand as far as my care. I have some concern about the bed they have been in creating pressure sores, especially if I can I get them to turn me regularly. The slings that they use for the Hoyer lift are only four-point, which does not support my head and neck like a six-point sling does. Which from my past experience causes me excruciating pain.
I finally was able to get use of my computer today.
has anybody heard from Ted? He started this thread and yet he seems to have dropped off the planet. Ted telephoned me just before his operation. We spoke at length about the good and bad aspects of having a colostomy operation. He was messaging me regularly. Then suddenly it all stopped. He doesn't appear to have posted anything on the website, either. Can anybody tell me whether he is okay or not.
mikeq , tetra , Sorry haven't been on my Father isnt well at the moment so I have been helping him & being there for him as he has for me. Colostomy is going well im 4 weeks post op now. I have had a little constipation just needed to take lactose then went the other way too loose! But I must say overall it is brilliant to have no nurse, no stimulations, & I feel more hungry too cause im emptying everyday rather than every 2 days.
I just need to find a balance so it stays free flowing with no constipation. I can change the bag daily myself so a little more independence too.
Hope all is good for you guys too, again sorry for the delay in replying & thanks for the concern appreciate it greatly
electricguy, How are you settling in the new facility? I would suggest you need to be very insistent on your mattress type. Give them the make & model of the one that you have used up till the move. You know your care needs best so don't be afraid to speak up & insist on what you need. Well done with the computer use. Take care electricguy, & chat soon.
tetra, Thanks. I have basically a hook on a stick that I use for zipping my jacket & that works to take off the bag too so delighted with that. I literally have the bowls in my own hands now
Hi cripple. (I feel like I’m using a “slur” to address you that way. ). Bowel movements are SO important. I have several weapons in my arsenal. Cascara Sagrada is a gentle herbal laxative. I take two capsules and will usually have a bowel movement the next day. If your situation is more urgent than that,...and it sounds like it is,... drink a cup of prune juice (or eat prunes). If you are eating anything at all, eat okra. Get it fresh or frozen. Get it canned as a last resort. You can make it more palatable by boiling it with a fresh tomato. And you need a “good oil”. Take a tablespoon (at least) of Flax Seed Oil. If you don’t have Flax Seed Oil, take some other nice oil, like coconut oil. (After the boiled okra cools a little, you could put the “good oil” in the okra. Win-win.)
For the bleeding (if there’s a lot of blood), eat fresh hot peppers. Cayenne mixed with whatever helps you stand it. Jalapeño will work, too. If you don’t have ‘fresh’, take cayenne in capsules. There are other herbs that help, but you probably don’t have them on hand. Collinsonia Root strengthens capillaries.
If parasites have caused a blockage (which might feel like a hard knot when you touch your tummy with your hand), then you need parasite killing herbs,...cloves, wormwood, and green black walnut hull tincture. Or else, take Quassia. I also use a (non-medically approved) zapper (SyncroZap). This kills bacteria and parasites, causing a nice smooth bowel movement. (Easily purchased online. FDA and medical doctors ridicule this. It works. You need one.) ctbusters.com for $35. drclarkstore.com for $290, I have both.
