Forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong spot..still learning. I recently volunteered to be in a study looking at the effects of hypoxia and caffeine on leg weakness following a sci. The lab is at a rehab facility in Boston. So first it was lovely to go into a building and not be noticed. I was a shy child and now I am noticed everywhere I go which has been an adjustment. I am fortunate to be out of the wheelchair now but need to canes to walk and I'm not exactly a picture of grace! I was also able to meet in person someone else with sci. In 2 years this was a first. Our conditions are different but it was so good to talk to someone who "gets it". Aside from that it was so wonderful to meet these dedicated researchers who are passionate about studying sci. I just wanted to pass on how hopeful it made me feel for the future.
I’m glad to hear that yours was a good experience, kate, Come to think of it, in these 5 years, I haven’t met another sci. I was in a nursing homes and hospitals for a year and a half. There were lots of people in wheelchairs. But to my knowledge, none were sci’s.
