I haven't had an aide for quite some time. And now, I think it's a real "plus" that I don't have one. They usually had children in school, and some had multiple clients that they cared for, each for a certain number of hours per day. So, every contact they would make in their own lives would have increased my contact, hence risk, of exposure to the virus.
Also, with face masks and gloves in short supply, that would have been a concern for any aide. They were already using gloves that I bought instead of using gloves from the agency that sent them here,... until I caught on to what they were doing. (And what were they doing with the boxes of gloves that their agency gave them? Re-selling? Hoarding?)
My neighbor knew I wanted eggs. But the stores here had none. Yesterday, she found one box of organic eggs,... the last one,... and put it in her grocery cart. She said she was happy because she knew how happy I would be to get them. She stepped away from her cart for a moment and someone stole the carton of eggs right out of her grocery cart!
panic buying is a big issue here in the UK, with shops and stores stripped clean. There have been reports of fighting in the aisles. It's funny how a crisis brings out the best and the worst in people. Fancy stealing from somebody's cart. Your story, vintage, was both disturbing and funny at the same time. Like you, I'm glad that I have stopped my carers coming in. Can't risk it. We are in lockdown here. Our Prime Minister has advised anybody with health issues to stay at home for three months. Suddenly the world is a very hostile place.
I’ve got a baclofen pump that needs refilling every twelve weeks. I’ve got to go and get it filled next Wednesday. I telephoned my Spinal Unit today and asked what precautions they are taking. “It’s changing day by day, Michael. Better phone up next Monday.” If this pump isn’t filled, it won’t be the virus that gets me it will be massive spasms and uncontrollable dysreflexia.

Peter and I were talking yesterday about how this crisis is distilling people down to their essence . Have heard some pretty grim stuff from normally nice people re natural selection and nature's way of taking care of an overcrowded NHS . Usually said in the form of a joke - but so so so unfunny My brother is a nurse practitioner and triaging people calling into his GP practice to make appointments with the doctors. He listens to their symptoms then makes a decision whether they should come in for a face to face appt or whether someone needs to visit (full protective gear) or just be given some advice over the phone/video. He was telling me yesterday that he is getting lots of people lying about their symptoms (or lack of symptoms) to get in front of a doctor or get a home visit. One lady told him her 4yr old had "blood in his poo" so my bro told her to bring the child into the surgery to be examined. She turned up and told them that blood in poo had stopped but she was also worried about his high temperature and cough!! The child seemed quite well apart from mild Covid19 symptoms and had no underlying health conditions that made him vulnerable. Surgery had to be put on lockdown until it was deep cleaned, and a member of staff has gone into isolation. When asked why she had done this she said it was because she was worried and lying was the only way to get her child in front of a doctor! Should mention also that lots of people have knocked on our door to ask if we need stuff - which is really lovely so much kindness happening too. Local teens have been putting phone numbers through doors with offers of help Vintage - your egg story does not surprise me - hope you get some soon. It's the little comforts that make these hard times bearable
Thanks, Moco. I still have two eggs left, but it’s a hard choice deciding whether to eat them with toast, to make pancakes, or to batter and bread some chicken fried steak.
My only good news,... my government-backed insurance company had been calling me incessantly, wanting to send a nurse for a yearly assessment. I hate those things because their visits make me vulnerable for being sent to a nursing home. Well, they have given it a rest. Who in their right mind wants to go visit old people in their homes right now? Worse yet, who wants to go to a nursing home? ... probably one of the most dangerous places on earth right now.

mikeq, vintage, softballdad, moco, tetra, nathanau, I have been thinking about how much I will miss anyone I know who does not survive this virus. That is of course if I survive it. Anyone I have come to know through this forum would be top on that list, with the exception maybe of an immediate family member. Living in a nursing home kind of puts me even more high risk than I already am, Having COPD besides my SCI.

Will keep you in my thoughts electricguy, Scary times. Who would have thought this time last year that we would be living in a Stephen King novel?

moco, Some of the people here, who take care of me, I do not believe are taking this stuff seriously. Some do not wear masks for my protection and who knows if they are taking any precautions while they are not here.
just got kicked out of grocery store for not wearing a mouth covering, pissed the s*** out of me. so i went down the street, didnt think they had the balls to tell a guy in powerchair to leave, but they did.

I'm not sure why you would be angry when the county health department announced face coverings are necessary in public. Why would a guy in a power chair be exempt?
because the scare the media has done to the public is bs, this respitory virus is not much worse than the flu yet everyone acts like they are going to die if not wearing a mask, it is treatable this virus and there is only a very low % of getting severely ill from it. so im just tired of govt attempt to try and control us here in california.

Not sure what is happening re mask legislation and advice in the the US sam, and I know it is different to UK advice. But I do know that although chances of getting a severe bout of covid19 are small the virus is pretty indiscriminate and impossible to predict. Over half of CV related deaths are in the over 80 age group here in the UK but there are many younger people and people without underlying health conditions who have died or are really poorly. In my town there has been at least one death of a healthy woman in her 40s with no underlying illnesses and we have had a couple of teenagers hospitalized with it too (along with a good many older people). Also it is not just about protecting yourself - it is also about protecting others from contracting it from you - and you can have a really mild illness but still pass it on to someone who can become very ill with it. You can also spead the illness before symptoms have developed. I haven't been wearing a mask as we are in lockdown and only go out if there is an absolute necessity. It is driving me mad some days being confined to my house and garden but consider it necessary to protect my family. I do have a mask for times when I have to collect medication for Peter Can't wait for it all to be over but I don't think it is anywhere like done with us yet
