I do bladder flushes at least once a week with saline solution with a couple drops ofperoxide mixed in. I've noticed that if I don't Cath the mixture out within ten minutes, I get really dizzy, nauseous, and my heart starts to race. What is happening?

I think its autonomic dysreflexia (AD) ... usually happens in Quads though. nikita would know better.
but I'm a T12. Could that still happen to me? I've had a doctor tell me it could, but this is a recent development after my surgery in September. It happened when i took robitussin a couple weeks ago too
Hi Knight it does sound like AD, people below the T6 level can suffer with it also but it is generally milder and doesn't generally cause the same rise in blood pressure.

Rehabilitation medicine: 1. Autonomic dysreflexia
The reported frequency of autonomic dysreflexia varies widely, but the condition appears to be relatively common, especially in patients with spinal cord lesions at or above the sixth thoracic neurologic level (T6). Estimates of lifetime frequency have ranged from 19% to 70%,1,2 the true value probably lying somewhere in between. On rare occasions, the condition is also seen in paraplegic patients with lesions below T6, but in this situation the reaction is usually somewhat milder
It is also suggested that blood pressure shouldn't be an issue due to the injury level being below T6
With lesions at or above the T6 level, the splanchnic vascular bed becomes involved, which provides the critical mass of blood vessels required to cause elevation of the blood pressure.
I would probably agree with DJ and lonewolf that is is AD....especially as the bladder is the trigger which is common trigger. The good thing is that you know what triggers in and you can prevent it. It may be worth discussing with you SCI doctor for confirmation and further advice because you dont want to presume you are not having any increase in blood pressure because this is what makes Autonomic Dysreflexia such a serious health risk.
it could be a form of AD but not necessarily leading to hypotension...if you don't have sensation than it could be your body reacting to a noxious stimulus...I never heard of irrigating with peroxide...it sounds strong and corrosive and it could be irritating your bladder and causing pain which your body reacts to with your symptoms of nausea and heart rate....who suggested irrigating with peroxide and how do you do it and why? I use a citric acid solution called urologic G to reduce uti's but you could also try high dose vitamin c tablets to make bladder acidic and reduce uti's

nikita I was thinking that as well. The peroxide does seem like it'll irritate the bladder like this.

Great info Lαrα! I knew I saw that people with an injury lower than T6 can get dysreflexic somewhere
Just to clear up everyone's suspicions about what I flush my bladder with, I use about 20-40ml of saline solution with just a couple DROPS of 3% peroxide. My urologist supports that kind of flushes, and I do them once or twice a week, depending on the odor of my urine.
I talked to my neurosurgeon today about the symptoms I've been experiencing when I get hurt below my injury or my bladder gets angry. I already had a follow up scheduled, so I asked while I was there, and he confirmed your suspicions; it is a mild form of AD.
I bruised my leg last night and it didn't upset my body until today when I accidentally grabbed my leg right on the bruise. I got dizzy, nauseous, and a racing heart. I had a friend with me, so i talked to her until the feeling went away. Phew!
My neurosurgeon told me just to stop banging myself up! Lol. Oops. I'm a klutz.
Thanks for the update Knight! It must be kind of a relief knowing the exact cause now Yeah take care of yourself too, don't want cause more damage to yourself then there already is
