"First Subject in Canada Transplanted at the University of Calgary
NEWARK, Calif., Jan. 10, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- StemCells, Inc. (Nasdaq:STEM) announced today that a team at the University of Calgary successfully transplanted its first subject in the Company's Phase I/II clinical trial in chronic spinal cord injury, with the Company's proprietary HuCNS-SC® human neural stem cells. The ninth subject to enroll in the trial, which was initiated in Switzerland...."
"With this transplantation in Canada, we have the first international trial investigating neural stem cells for spinal cord injury," said Stephen Huhn, M.D., FACS, FAAP, Vice President, CNS Clinical Research at StemCells, Inc. "The 12-month data from the first cohort has demonstrated a favorable safety profile, and sensory gains first detected in two of the three subjects at the six-month assessment have persisted. The third subject remains stable. We are extremely encouraged with the progress of our spinal cord injury program and the transition into an international study will accelerate completion of enrollment." Yes it is promising as in the first cohorth of pathients (3 patients treated with T Injury ASIA A) two of them have recovered few levels of sensation and it has been documented with electrophysiology one year after the treatment. In a few months data from the second cohort of patients (Asia B patients) should be reported. The ongoing recruting is for ASIA C patients and they paln to finish recruting soon: "We are confident that we will wrap up enrollment in Q1 2014, which should pave the way for the controlled Phase II efficacy trial that we plan to initiate in the middle of 2014." seekingalpha.com/article/1939261-stemcells-ceo-writes-letter-to-shareholders-identifies-upcoming-catalysts?source=email_rt_article_readmore
The animal studies on which the trial is based, showed significant recovery in incomplete SCI, so this is not a cure, but hopefully it willl be an effective therapy for some people with SCI (more likely for the incomplete SCI) That would bring excitement & money in the field and accelerate progress toward more effective therapies for all.. I hope!
That's great paolo! I like how they mention that it's not a cure but will be like effective therapy and not give people false hope
Here it was just me pointing out it's not a cure for the reason you mention, but I can tell you for sure they have been very carefull in running the trial and reporting results not to be accused of giving false hope. In other cases I have seen press releses written in a misleading way to hype the results probably to drive money in a specific direction

Good news to hear I personally have an affinity with stem cell inc since i was invited to Switzerland to be assessed as a potential candidate. I can confirm that for the week i stayed at Bulgrist University paraplegic hospital in Zurich all accommodation, travel, meals and flights for two persons, myself and a guest was all paid for by stem cell inc. The Swiss gov medical authorities had made stem cell inc sign a 17 page protocol all designed to safe guard my interests. As for other trials in other countries i cannot comment however on this i can confirm the Swiss have extremely high medical ethical standards.
After one week of intensive tests an infected sore had excluded my candidacy. I found the study team extremely professional especially Profs Armin Curt who was head of the clinical trial. I had the opportunity to discuss the outcomes of the trial. Once the safety barrier has been proven scientifically more experimentation with scaffolds nogo inhibitors and cell dose will follow for more effective results. This i am eager to to see ie. the elusive proof and by this i mean scientific proof of efficacy on a massive scale.
