I havent actually actively participated in this thread much but clearly a nerve has been hit...so il offer my input.
Discussion is healthy..not everyone will agree with each other but that doesent mean respect cannot be given to each other..discussions involve varied viewpoints.
If you feel strongly about your view then the ideal is that you help people to understand it. Present your rational and then leave it for others to consider.
With regards to Obama..well i was pleased to see him elected...because for me, it showed that the country in general had developed...I know the USA is a powerfully developed country but i considered it lacking with the racist element that seems adopted still by many citizens and the great divide between the poor and the rich.
The problem is that Obama will quite likely is not the decision maker in the scheme of things...i would imagine he is just a front man or in this case a scapegoat. Will his presence in the Whitehouse actually turn out to have a positive benefit on the racist viewpoint in the country or would it be like putting a representative from the Jewish community in power in pre war Germany?
Not a very friendly environment for a website called "Inspired".
It is kind of funny, isn't it Truwrecks, how this man who vowed to bring the country together has sown such discord. In many respects, I do feel the same way that you do.
As for Lara's comment, and I will say this as tactfully as I can (don't you hate comments like that? It means that what I say might be harsh!), I think that Obama himself is a racist and that unfortunately racism will be stronger in the United States now. People are people no matter what the color of their skin, or the beliefs of their hearts. And I think that he was only elected as a backlash to what had been happening in our nation for a while.
We are tired of war. Many were very angry at Bush and the Repooplicans because of what was going on in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have learned not to trust our politicians. And Obamacare was passed against the will of most Americans right before a Christmas break by the vote of the Dimocrats, when most of the Repubs were absent. Somehow it has been pushed along despite the many problems associated with just the internet site.
As one without health insurance, Universal Health Care could be a huge help to me. But Obamacare has turned into something more political than medical and is like one of those boulders rolling down the mountain through the snow and collecting more and more snow and ice and destructive material. Nancy Pelosi at one point said that no one would know what was in it until it was passed. We are starting to find out and many are trying desperately still to stop it.
I wish that there were a way to provide healthcare to the poor without this obamanation! Yes, we had medicaid and medicare. And now apparently they will be less effective and perhaps pulled into this rolling rock of disaster. I worry for the United States.
This thread might be better locked. I stayed off the board for a few days to think about this issue and I think it has gotten out of the spirit of this forum, and I have contributed too. This is the last post I will make in this thread because I don't have anything else positive to contribute to it.
We haven't had to locked a thread since the site began, with the exception of a few trolls. I'd add that Tw has taken this as a personal attack on him and I'd tell him not to get his panties in a bunch. He needs to grow a thicker skin. And reread the whole thread. See you started this, by being ignorant. It's Ok.. mistakes happen.
Tbone nailed it. TW, this wasn't about you, and the two parties that were came to a positive agreement. Politics winds everyone up much like religion.
I also want to thank TW, for the number of hits this thread will be getting. Face it, people love to watch a fight.
Heehe. We got some action I wish my quote worked because this would be fun. Fisrt I'd quote TW, about this unfriendly site called inspired. I'd say, Ya need a hanky TW. Then I'd quote TW again with the whole lock this thread. I'd say, We haven't had to locked a thread since the site began, with the exception of a few trolls. You do know that with politics and religion, that I am always right, right? There is something about politics that seems to bring out the worst in everybody. I am trying to grow a thicker skin myself. This topic does not have that much to do with SCIs. When talking about illness or injury I think that most of us tend to show a little more compassion, or humanity. When talking of the American political system, not so much.
truwrecks, there weren't any personal attacks or insults so I don't think it's fair to say that this isn't a friendly environment. As Lαrα has mentioned, it's only a discussion and if you don't like what's being discussed fine but please don't take it personally.
So the country needs better education and more equality in wealth right? Which party do you think would be better suited to accomplish this?
Maybe he has pushed for some good things, but at what cost in the long run? Two of my family members had their hours cut to less than 29 hours per week and they are making close to minimum wage. You can't live on that and have anything but poverty. Now they are struggling to get by. If it wasn't for my family helping each other my nephews would only be able to eat 1 per day, and that is cooking at home. Why should I be thankful for that? I am sitting at the front lines of the war on poverty and I don't see anything good coming from a handout. People need education. Education is how you fix social issues. You can't sustain a welfare state and the government knows it. The people pulling the strings of both major political parties don't give a damn about anyone but the super rich, and they prefer the rest of use to be super poor and dumb so we are easier to manage.
Just because I don't like the overall direction that the country is going politically doesn't mean I want to be poor, a slave or racist!
There are plenty of other socialist countries out there you can move to if that's what you fancy. We don't need that in the USA!

So the president is responsible for the reduction of working hours? You are unhappy with the reduction of working hours? Would you support the president requiring 40 hour work weeks? Oh my, imagine if president Obama required 40 hour work weeks!!!!!!
My point was that the president does not dictate the economy. The middle class is being squeezed out due to technological advances creating only a small number of rich and many poor. Blaming the president is not productive. The planet needs to recognize the problem so that we can all work on a solution. Be aware that people like the Koch brothers do not wish to adversely affect their position in society. I think the anger directed to the president is misdirected.
It may well be that socialism would be the most appropriate method of governing a society as it becomes more technically advanced. I don't know. I realize that you consider that word to be dirty but we all need to open our minds to at least consider new solutions to new problems.

Better education and more equality in wealth? Education is usually the ticket to higher wealth. Wealth generally comes to those who work harder or better, and not to those who just want it or demand it. And education is open to most. There are scholarships and community college is fairly cheap. It took me a long time, but I eventually got my BS when I was in my 30s.
And for those who think that we should all contribute so that each is wealthy, my hand is always open! Cross my palm with some of that wealth and I will thank you very much!
ladylimpsalot...you did amazingly well to have the motivation to achieve and further your education....well done to you!
The problem is that some people give up at the starting line...they have no motivation wether intrinsic or extrinsic to educate them selves further. Maybe they feel its a hopeless cause.
I love to learn and study but i do for my own satisfaction,,but that is because i have contentment in my life and my focus can be on this. I am fortunate that i do not have worries that some people who are socially dis advantaged do have.
Social difference is instigated by the social structure within the country and this is dictated by the powers that be who make the decisions. It important to remember that a country's problems are not caused currently.....in fact the social effect, financial effect has been set in motion from previous governments that were in power before.
The people who suffer are the the disadvantaged, socially and economically. A great government is one who should want to lessen that divide amongst the people of its country.

We each go in the direction that we feel we need to. And yes, some give up at the starting line, and I took a long break in the middle, because I could not afford it. Yes, some have more than others. But very few are without resources or doomed to be where they are forever. We are not all the same. Most mothers and fathers delight in the differences between their babies. As kids go to school some excel in basketball, and some in mathematics. I was excited that I won the spelling B. If school had not rewarded the best and the brightest there would have been no reason for the best and the brightest to want to win.
I agree that there needs to be help for the disadvantaged, socially and economically. I don't believe that we should all have the same and be the same. Each of us needs to work for what we need to the best of our ability. And everyone deserves a chance. But I think that with this push for income equality we will have more people lying on their couches and enjoying what is being given to them instead of reaching for what is ahead and trying to work at the best of their ability to get more, have a bigger house, have a nicer car.
My doctors have gone to school for years and years. They put way more into their educations than he who never went to college. And they work harder as well. Should they not make significantly more than the cashier at the grocery store?
