My mate Colin, a 26 year Paraplegic, got news last week that his father in law was passing away, so he and his family booked flights to Manila so his wife could be there before he went, but unfortunately that wasn't going to be the case. So off the family goes. Drive to Darwin,1500kms then fly to Manila via Singapore. When they arrive in Singapore Colin's wheelchair is not there. It was not loaded in Darwin. So he is given, in his words a tank, to sit in for 9 hours while they wait for the next flight to Manila. Ok, arrive in Manila and obviously no wheelchair, so put on a seat in the customs hall to wait. Can not go through customs as the hand baggage holding the family's passports has gone missing. 3 hours latter bag is found and they can proceed through customs, but wait, how does a paraplegic proceed without a wheelchair ??? So he is put in an transfer seat and taken through customs to the exit, then put on a plastic seat to wait the arrival of his wheelchair from Darwin, 10 hours. the airline refused to give him a wheelchair to borrow. He is not a happy chappy Unfortunately it was an Australian Airline that did this, not QANTAS. I think the disability advocate will be very busy when Colin arrives back at the end of the month. Can you believe this treatment of a disabled person in this day and age ???
Colin has been in touch with me this morning and the airline has told him that they are not responsible ??? I wasn't aware that passengers where responsible for loading the plane, did any of you guys know that ??? LOL So after sitting at international airports for 19 hours with no wheelchair the airline is not responsible, wow. I really want to name and shame the airline but probably not a good idea.
