Stretching exercises are more important than we realize and should ideally be carried out on a regular basis. Stretching helps maintain flexibility, will help with spasticity and ultimately help with independence.
Here are some exercises that you can look at doing and most of them can be done by all injury levels.
This exercise will help stretch or maintain range in your hips and trunk.
Position yourself lying on your stomach with your upper-body supported through your elbows. Less advanced: 1. Place pillows under chest. 2. Use overhead slings to support upper trunk weight. 3. Position the patient in prone only. More advanced: 1. Transfer weight onto one elbow and lift other arm off the bed. 2. Place elbows up on small stools.
To stretch or maintain range in your hip.
Position yourself sitting with one leg out straight in front of you and your other knee bent so that it points out to the side. Place your foot on your opposite leg.
To stretch or maintain range in your hips.
Position yourself lying on your back. Place your legs in a `froggie` position with your feet up near your bottom. Place a weight over your knees. Less advanced: Place a rolled up towel under the knees for support. More advanced:Increase the weight on the knees.
I've been having a big problem with my right hip. My right leg always wants to lay out facing to the right. I try to keep a small pillow propping it up straight. My physical therapist comes twice a week , & she's concerned that my hip could be put out of it's socket. My husband stretches me out regularly too, but I'm worried about it. I've noticed a lot more spasticity in both my legs for awhile now. Since my injury level is T3, I can't do most of these exercises. I was wondering if anyone else has had hip problems like this? It can get quite painful, too.
anita..how much movement do you have in your legs as an 'incomplete' and do you have 'feeling'..?
Lara....I have some toe & foot movement in my left , but nothing at all in my right leg or foot. I have some touch sensation in both legs & feet, but it seems to be diminishing for some reason. I can't distinguish hot/cold either, like in the shower, I have to be carefully not to burn my skin. Also lately having lots of upper body sweats (above T3) & chills, alternating. Very annoying!

As it's still a mystery as to how/why I became paralyzed during thoracic surgery, it's difficult to figure out these symptoms. When I finally review my records, hopefully a cause will be found. I can sympathize with your frustration of your circumstances!
anita, my left leg likes to rotate out wards and my right legs like to rotate inward! The "froggie" position exercise Lαrα posted above helps with stretching my hip muscles but I don't do it enough. I think I'll start doing it more often.
anita..what was the procedure you had? If you are experiencing less sensation now then i think you should go and see your neurologist and discuss this. You may need an MRI to be sure nothing is causing further nerve damage.
The exercises that i posted are suitable for a higher level injury than yours so to be honest you should be able to do them so what do you feel is preventing you?
DJ...taking time out every day to do your stretches for below your injury level is so important for you...im posting these stretches purposely for your level and lower levels
Another good stretching for me is of the piriformis muscle. My joints tend to hyperextend, so I did this before I was paralyzed to keep hips in alignment. I adapted these stretches to do them on my bed after I was paralyzed, and they have helped my lateral stability (standing, transfers from chair) and given relief after too much sitting. Here are links to a written description and a helpful video: sportsmedicine.about.com/od/flexibilityandstretching/qt/Piriformis_str.htm
anita, My hips have always tended to rotate out, especially when I am lying down--the outside of my feet lay against the bed even without covers. This did put strain on the muscles holding the hip joint together, and I sometimes got nerve pain from the strain. The above stretches alleviated the pain and also strengthened my hips.

I didn't do my stretches or ROM excercises when I first got injured and eventually my hips have become real tight to the point of my legs will not lay flat. Imagine that "froggie" stretch. That's how I look when I lay on my back. So I have been concentrating on stretching them from now on. If anyone has any more advice please share. My word of advice is to STRETCH. That's s-t-r-e-t-c-h
I do 1hr leg work daily. lying on my back in bed i move each leg by hand from hip, ankles to toes counting to 100 in reps of 3. very boring but again i just switch on ABBA music and dream of Agnetha in her younger years. She fires me up on time every time. lol.

Abba, hadn't heard that name in years, remember they were quite a hit when I was in 6th grade. I use music when I do my workouts as well, gives me a little edge when I need it.
Yep Kilg, looks like all my childhood dream women have gone grey and old. Debbie harry, Chrissy hynde and sadly Agnetha to. Linda carter still looks good but she can't sing, but her whip would do the trick for me surely.

I like doing exercise daily specially foot and knee and many more. Running, long walks and jogging helps are some of the legs exercise. I would like suggest that those who do not do exercise should start doing it because it has number of benefits and it helps you in building your self confidence.

Don't want to sound rude but long walks and jogging are not on for most of us. its like suggesting to try to fly for A.B people.
