So...i know that for many of us keep busy in different ways but what do you enjoy in your spare time.....?
My main hobby and passion has always been horse riding and competing...I still enjoy my horses post SCI....but different, they are still shown in competitions but not by myself...i go watch and i go to the stables and brush the horses. Im also a riding teacher but i tend to just help friends out now and mostly in the summer time.
Im also a Tarot reader...this takes a lot of my time up...as i have a Tarot page on facebook also with 1,700 members! I tend to do free readings on there to help people out with guidance. I can get calls at any time at home to do a private reading...although i consider myself a professional reader, i enjoy it so much i cant say its work...if i do get paid...i give 25% to charity.
Maybe the forum is a hobby too.im here lots too and i love the forum soooo much......
One thing i definitely want to do more of this is year is to go and watch more live bands and maybe get to a couple of festivals as i love music too.
Well, I'm an avid scuba diver and scuba instructor. Even with the diminished use of my legs, I can still handle classes, pools and boats using my braces and crutches...though beach dives can be a real challenge! Once I'm in the water, I'm completely mobile.
Another facet to my diving is underwater photography. There are so many interesting things to photograph, it never gets boring.
I also volunteer at a local science center called the "Barrier Island Center" It's focus is on the fragile environment of this barrier island we live on in this part of Florida. Also more giant sea turtles nest here than anywhere else in the US, so sea turtle education is a secondary focus. I mainly do docent work and power point presentations on various topics of interest.
Guess...finally, the computer is another free time occupier for me...like this forum is a great placed to hang out...better than Facebook!
I can tell how passionate you are about your scuba diving cbdives...and its so important to keep the mind and body active... Can i ask you something im curious about..how does the issue of reduced muscle power affect your mobility in the water?
I know you have mentioned that you are completely mobile but how do you rely on upper body strength for mobility? Do you have some strength in your legs which you are able to use to some effect because of buoyancy?
My thighs are pretty much unaffected. With fins you get most of your propulsion from thighs and abdomen muscles. The lower legs are just there. But even with no leg mobility, you can a tremendous just from your hands and arms. Electric propulsion units are also on the market.
My biggest challenge is getting to the ocean on a beach dive...boat entries are a piece of cake. I'll get to the back of the boat by "deck crawling" if the sea conditions are bad
My hobbies where pre sci, bird keeping. I bred South American conurs and asiatic parrots and motorcycles where my passion. But now I must admit I don't do much in the way of hobbies. Properly why I get so bored.
Running marathons was my great passion, useless dwellling on the past. During the winter periods it just work, the evening course i ve been doing and my private building project. During the week i daily come home at 8pm, eat watch some tv and go to bed. Hobbies are something we all like doing when we can do them. One of the great privileges in teaching are our 2 month summer hols. My evening course will be done by then. so the plan is to spend more time at the build project, quality time with family at beach in late afternoon and evenings. I hate the sandy ones yet the rocky ones are hard to access and will need help when available to go there. Daughter will be doing intense training in scynchro swimming so i need to help her do the on land physical training and hopefully trim out myself too. It will been waterpolo season too, quite fanatical here, daughter and her team do exhibition scychro swimming shows so i guess i will have to taxi her to and from the water polo pitches. I'm not that keen going abroad for a holiday i can do better here. Still got my diving equipment yet may paddi open water license has expired plus ||SCI so i intend to stick to snorkling looking at sea bed. Malta has great diving sites but to see something you need to go places void of people. Still remember the last octopus i caught, best to use a hook instead of a harpoon. nice to eat too. I could go on for ages yet even if i only do 20% of what i intend to do, god willing i intend to have a great summer
I used to ride motocross and fly a Cirrus SR22TN. I sold the Cirrus but recently took delivery of a Sky Arrow hand control light sport plane. I taxied it last weekend. It's going to be a lot of fun. I need a minimum of one hour instruction and a biennial flight review and I'll be on my own. Even though the plane accommodates my disability, the preflight inspection requires you to climb on top to check the fluid levels. Doh! I can't do that! Luckily there are always friends available to help. I'll post some pictures when I go fly. Someday I hope to get another Cirrus and travel again.
i also sold my two KX450's. Awesome motocross bikes. I still have a 2003 KX250that I bought used and rebuilt with a 300cc kit. That bike was going to be fun! I rode it once. I got hurt eight months ago yesterday.
