I went onto the link and then read more on the additional link they offered which goes into the story more full story
The procedure and the concept behind this is just amazing but if proves successful for this patient and the team it will lead to exciting breakthroughs in function for people with Spinal Cord Injury.
Although the actual idea and logic behind the procedure wont be done justice by me myself, i will try to explain briefly for members.
The procedure basically involves implanting a chip into the brain to stimulate a movement. The brain normally triggers movement via messages through the spinal cord but this cannot be relied upon when there is damage to the spinal cord for people with SCI.
So this chip allows the message to bypass the spinal cord and instead is linked up to a computer which stimulates the movement.
I think the young man,who is almost 23 years old,is incredibly brave, especially with the associated risks of the operation. From my understanding they are now waiting to see if the procedure has been successful in triggering a movement in his hand.
Thankyou grammy! I was wondering what the outcome of this was...I must say that im very impressed! I have just watched the video and i think its just amazing what they have achieved here. It goes to prove there there really is no limit on what can be achieved in the field of research and science.
DJ...did you get chance to watch the video on the link yet?
