Lumbar Nerves (L1 – L5) Injuries generally result in some (or all) loss of function in the hips and legs. Little or no voluntary control of bowel or bladder, but can manage on their own using catheters and being on specialised bowel programmes. Depending on strength in the legs, may need a wheelchair and may also walk with braces and/or crutches (if incomplete injury)
Sacral Nerves (S1 – S5) Injuries can result in some loss of function in the hips and legs. Little or no voluntary control of bowel or bladder, but can manage on their own with catheters and bowel programmes Most likely will be able to walk
The L1-L5 description could be me LOL. Very informative video as well. I was just diagnosed with a bulging disc at L4-L5. The doctor is doing an epidural but did not recommend anything else. I don't believe the epidural will do anything but ease the pain, which is great, but I am more concerned with fixing the problem. Is there anything that can actually fix the problem outside of surgery? I am out on surgery.

To be honest, without surgery, it comes down to management of these discs. What is important to remember jeff1967, is that these are the largest discs in the spine and they take the most weight and pressure.
The vertebrae in the spine at that level are the largest in the spine but they are more likely to degenerate. When this happens the vertebrae does not support the weight and the frame the same and they squash down on the discs.
You need to adopt a new regime of back management. There is a lot that you can do to alleviate the issue and not significantly worsen it.
No lifting Be careful how you bend, get a grabber Consider your posture Consider not putting weight on Take up swimming Sleep correctly for posture
I do believe we have forum threads for these too I will find them for you. These are just some ideas but it will be good for you to be aware of symptoms of worsening disc issues.
jeff1967,shall I remind you every day to eat healthier! lol Trust me, you will feel so much better and more so if you join a gym, do some swimming.
The way I see it is, sure our bodies are messed up in some parts but that doesent equate to 'our' body and our need to take good care of what we have. Psychologically, you will feel better about yourself and physically you will be building your strength up and getting cardio.
