Many people with Spinal Cord Injury struggle to have a good nights sleep due to pain....or often due to other SCI related issues. Lack of sleep affects individuals in a negative way. I know how much i struggle to sleep at night and i wake several times during the night too! Its frustrating but leaves me tired during the day too.
I was reading an article earlier about the effects of lack of sleep on people in general and how it has been the contributing factor in motor vehicle fatalities, medical errors and industrial disasters.
Studies have also shown that people who do not sleep enough are at increased risk for chronic disease such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and even cancer.
I have posted a poll up as i thought it would be interesting to see how much sleep us SCI peeps get a night! We should be having at least 7 hours of sleep a night...i know i dont
Please add your vote/s and feel free to add a comment...When the poll is closed i will do a thread on ideas for sleeping better....
(Sorry guys, i messed the poll up...i should have allowed two votes to include if you wake during the night so please add it in a comment..)
I normally sleep around 6-8 hours and some nights I wake up for a few mins so my bladder can empty itself. Falling asleep is pretty easy these days (probably from being so busy during the day) so that's good.
I sleep like I'm dead, even before taking meds as I must now (to offset steroids I take to manage my disease). Usually I sleep 8 hours, but lately pain has been an issue and my sleep is not restful.
