Hello everyone. My fiance needs your help. Over 6 months back, I had taken her to the ER for severe back pain. They took X rays and an MRI, diagnosed her with a herniated disc (didn't specify where exactly), told her to set up an appointment with a chiropractor. Then wrote her a painkiller script and she was discharged. She followed orders, and has been seeing the chiropractor for six months. She goes in, he does his thing, and 15 minutes later she's out and sore as hell. But, we figured that was just part of the process.
So, the other night, it flared up again after work (she works as a home health aide, so lifting is sometimes required). She was in tears. She took some ibuprofen that night, and several hours later it finally subsided enough for her to fall asleep. The next day it flared up again. Ibuprofen did nothing, so I took her to the ER. The doctor "diagnosed" her with acute lower back pain, gave her vicodin and flexiril, and gave her a referral to the local spine specialist, whom also is the only one in the area that accepts our insurance. This was on the 30th of July, and she can't get in until the 13th.
She's in tears several hours every day, and it's even gotten so bad she's told me she wishes she'd die because the pain is that severe and that constant. She is also now out of pain medication. I called the ER to see if they might call her in a refill, but they refuse, saying she has to see the spine specialist, they can't do anything more. I can't stand seeing her like this anymore, guys and gals. I'm doing everything I can, but this is killing me. Is there anything I can do to help her? Anything I can give to her or do for her that can help her get through the next 12 days? Thanks for taking the time to read this huge wall of text, I appreciate it.
She's now telling me most of her body is numb. Is that the medication or should I start worrying?
Hi pudgyalpaca, and To the forum, I'm very sorry to hear about your partners problems, it sounds a bit like how my issues started. If she says she's feeling numb I would be straight back to the ER, ASAP and make them get you some painkillers.
I'm very sorry to hear that, it sounds like a real struggle you two are experiencing. Like Butiki said, would it be possible to call an ambulance and get her to ER?

Thanks so much for all the warm welcomes and replies. I'm taking her to another ER. This one pretty much gave me the "I'm the doctor here" look every time I mentioned my concerns. She does have some numbness in the saddle area, so I'm -really- concerned about cauda equina syndrome. The trick is finding a doctor that isn't so full of himself that he won't listen to concerns. Thanks again, everyone.

Alright! New ER. They did a CT scan and it isn't cauda equina, just the herniated disc. Doctor gave her some meds to last her until her appointment with the spine specialist. Thanks so much for the advice, everyone. I cannot thank you enough.

Thanks for the update pudgyalpaca! I'm really happy that they've diagnosed her already. Let us know how things go!
