Please push the Federal Aviation Association to require airlines to provide designated wheelchair accessible spaces on every commercial aircraft, which will allow passengers to remain safely seated in their personal wheelchairs.
Dear President Obama and Congressional Leaders:
The Air Carrier Access Act of 1986, Title 49, Section 41705 of the U.S. Code, prohibits commercial airlines from discriminating against passengers with disabilities. The act itself, however, does not have any provision to protect the rights of those who, because of their disabilities and for safety reasons, cannot sit in a standard airline passenger seat and must remain seated in their personal wheelchairs like myself. These individuals are prevented from traveling any way except by land vehicles, trains, or ships. This constitutes a blatant infringement on their civil rights and access to affordable and expedient transportation.
We, the undersigned, propose that every commercial aircraft have one to two removable passenger seat(s), in the front row of every aircraft, with a 4-point air cargo system underneath (identical to the system used in the U.S. Air Force cargo transport aircraft) to fasten each wheelchair securely to the floor of the cabin. An additional safety belt will be required around the waist of each wheelchair user to secure them in their seats. This proposed set up will guarantee the accessibility and safety of every passenger on board...
man, if only that could come to pass into regulations... fat chance though when one considers the attitude of airlines towards liability and profit issues... I think there's more of a chance for a singular airline to breakthrough and offer such accommodations outside of regulation/law but that might still take a long time before one - or more - airline realizes that there are a lot of wheelchair bound potential passengers who choose not to travel abroad at all due to existing regulations [which for many are demeaning/humiliating]...
this notwithstanding, when I received this notice in my e-mail, instead of deleting it, I made the rare exception, logged on here and signed.... if I could stay in my own chair during an intercontinental flight [here in the us and even canada I can simply just drive my own car to travel], or at least be able to transfer directly from my chair into an airplane seat [and vice versa] instead of being forced to transfer into that ridiculous, narrow aisle chair, be strapped and wheeled to my seat like some mannequin, I'd finally be able to realize the dream of visiting my country of birth in the old world... and likely fly there on more-less regular basis as well... never even mind potential travel to other countries/lands I've wanted to visit.... I'd cross my fingers if my hands had a bit more dexterity... but a multitude of signatures would work better, I hope you'll spread this petition far and wide asap.... good job getting this petition formulated and signed for now at least.... cheers...
We have joined forces with Michele Campanelli-Erwin, the founder of All Wheels Up, Inc. (a 501(c)3 nonprofit group whose mission is to advocate for equality in air travel for those who require a wheelchair for mobility and safe seating, to make this petition a reality. She has already approached the FAA, and they are very receptive. Now, we are focusing on getting the Qstraint system crash tested. I will be handling the fundraising for this and will be working on media awareness and the legislative end of this project's mission. We do need you, however, to support our efforts by continuing to share our petition and promote our endeavors. Thank you for your ongoing part in giving wheelchair users the freedom to fly!
Thank you for signing Wheelchair Access On Commercial Airlines petition. With your help, we've reached 4506 signers!
Now it's critical that we kick this campaign up a notch. When you call, you don't need to say a lot—just reiterate the main message of the petition, which is:
"Please push the Federal Aviation Administration to require airlines to provide designated wheelchair accessible spaces on every commercial aircraft, which will allow passengers to remain safely seated in their personal wheelchairs."
