For those who arent aware..September is National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month...
Spinal Cord Injury is life changing and devastating not only for the individual but for their loved ones too but why do we need to raise awareness? Well there are so many good reasons to be honest. Looking at this purely from a personal level for a moment.Spinal Cord Injury and the degree that it effects someone is little understood by those who it hasnt affected.
Spinal Cord Injury isnt just about the injury or the paralysis or the wheelchair/walking aids. No..its also about the loss of function throughout the body that people dont see.
The inability to poop on your own without assistance and/or medication. Having little or no control over your bladder..wearing nappies or self catheterising or having an indwelling catheter and leg bag. The loss of sensation to sexual parts....loss of sexual function.....lets not forget the nerve pain and the musco skeletal pain...the involuntary spasms that spring from nowhere. Those with higher level injuries not being able to breath without assistance or sweat...or cool their bodies down if they overheat and on the other hand needing to be careful not to get too cold. I could point out so much more!
the estimated 1,275,000 individuals in the United States who live with a spinal cord injury (SCI) cost society billions of dollars in health-care costs and lost wages;
an estimated 100,000 of those individuals are veterans who suffered the spinal cord injury while serving as members of the United States Armed Forces;
every 48 minutes a person will become paralyzed, underscoring the urgent need to develop new neuroprotection, pharmacological, and regeneration treatments to reduce, prevent, and reverse paralysis; andincreased education and investment in research are key factors in improving outcomes for victims of spinal cord injuries, improving the quality of life of victims, and ultimately curing paralysis. From a monitary point of view spinal cord injury costs the governments billions...Wouldnt you think they would be pouring money into cure research?! The saddest thing for me is to see a child with a spinal cord injury because I as many others will know what lies ahead for them, Please share this to as many people you can and lets develop awareness....and make a difference..
I didnt either..i just thought that people in wheelchair had paralyzed legs and that was it! I had no idea of the rest of the stuff that is dealt with DJ
I was sitting here today dwelling on the fact that my accident was 4 years ago today when I received the email referencing this post it was definitely a nice reminder that I am not the only one dealing with this. When I was growing up my pastor was a person dealing with a sci and as I watched him I never realized all that he had to go through until I myself had to deal with the same things
