This looks quite interesting for foot drop sufferers..
For 39 years, Mariconi's right leg swung out dramatically. He tripped frequently and took only a few steps a day.
Two years ago, the family goal for a trip to Italy sent Mariconi back to physical therapy for the first time in decades, which is where a doctor told him about the L-300, a wireless electronic device that comes with a sensor that goes in Mariconi's shoe and a cuff that goes just under his knee. The sensor in the shoe sends electrical stimulation to a nerve and a muscle in his leg.
"The device stimulates the nerve and the muscle that does that movement for him so he's able to then clear his foot instead of trip over it," said Angie Davis, a physical therapist at Kernan Hospital.
With the L-300 and Davis' help at Kernan, Mariconi took that trip to Europe last year -- and walked for miles.
"My 9-year-old son at the time got tired before I did. So, he was slowing me down," Mariconi said. "My next try is to get to run -- something that I have not done since 1970."
Mariconi said he hopes a new addition to the device -- the L-300 Plus -- will turn his walk into a run. The newer device stimulates the thigh muscle.
That sound really good Sara, I have been fed up recently tripping up on the least bit of raised ground and having to save myself before hitting the floor. I will have to look into this piece of equipment. Thanks for the good information.
