I have thought quite often about this issue..and ive often considered setting something up...Many people who leave rehab..dont really have any back up on an emotional and social level. If it wasnt for a forum, i would have been lost after my SCI and after leaving rehab.
In rehab, we are all going through a tough time. Trying to understand what has happened to us and worrying about the future and what it holds. I feel there is a desperate need for a mentoring service. I know that here in the UK there is nothing at all set up like this ...Do other members know of this service where you live?
I think if we are being honest...although it was good to be home..i did feel isolated in a way. I realised that i was in this on my own..my mom was amazing but i would have so appreciated knowing that there was someone there who i could message or speak to who knows the issues first hand that i may be going through
Not a doctor or consultant..even though they may be experts in this field....they dont really know what it is like to live with SCI..and its highly unlikely they have a close family member with this also. Im sure a mentoring scheme would not be difficult to find volunteers to be involved.
I found great comfort from my friends in rehab....we had a connection and understanding...heck...ive laughed and cried with them lol....Of course i kept in touch with the friends i had there but still, i dont want to always talk to them about any issues i may have...They were pretty much newly injured themselves.
I think many would benefit from a mentor for just a few months or until they were back in the swing of things
Im just thinking out loud..but i would love to mentor someone...and try and make a difference in someone's life and im sure others may feel the same and want to.
Not this kind of mentor though!!! lol This by the way are two characters who are on a very funny show in the UK!
