For those with Spinal Cord Injury it is common for the need to catheter so that they can have assistance in emptying the bladder. Many individuals with SCI will have a degree of incontinence and/or retention.
When the problem is identified, the next step will be to decide on the best method of catheterising. It will depend on several factors wether it will be more suitable for an indwelling or to intermittently catheter.
Many quadriplegics will have an indwelling catheter as it is more practical but also because it avoids accidents from leaking. Mostly the catheter enters through the penis for the guy or the urethra for the female. Some people opt for the catheter to access through the abdomen.
Many paraplegics opt for self catheterising as they have their use of their hands so they are able to be more independent. ..Intermittent catheterising is the procedure of inserting a catheter into the bladder and emptying it..The catheter is inserted temporarily whilst the bladder is emptied which then it is disposed of.
These types of catheter come with a disposable bag
Some guys also prefer the condom catheter as this is less invasive...this allows drainage as and when needed, similar to the indwelling although this does rely on the individual being able to void them selves to some degree.
Has anyone used condom catheters? I am wondering if you have problems with them falling off or leaking. I use MTG pocket pack intermittent catheters but i do leak a lot. I was thinking of using these for travel purposes. I just get worried having them fall off and leaking all over yourself.

Hey joemonte, I use the Coloplast condom catheters all the time. For me I sometimes leak after physio from all the leg movements which loosen up the condom and sometimes if the condom isn't put on well it leaks but if I make sure it's on all the way it doesn't leak. When I was in the hospital the condom they tried to used wasn't good and always fell out. Then when I went to rehab I found that it was too sticky and removing the condom was no fun. I've been using this Coloplast condom for the last three years and I really can't complain. Try out some other brands and see if they work any better for you!
Which intermittent catheters do you guys use? Until now Ive been using lubricated ones, on which you pour water, and lately Im trying the ones that have a water bag besides, so you just squeeze it, water lubricates it and that's it. Saves you time (no water pouring),. Im just wondering which is better, Healthier
I get to try Coloplast's SpeediCath tonight, and if I like them, I'll get the SpeediCath Compact for Women! My Urologist and I are trying to prevent future UTI's

Best intermitent catheters i've ever used. i use the male compacts for travel and the reguler for home.No fuss with needing lube just open and insert and they seem for me to slide in WAY SMOOTHER. A lot more sterile i think ,not having to open completly and fumble with lube gel etc.

I AGREE!! I CAN'T WAIT TO TRY THE COMPACT!! (I'm really excited to not have lube-covered hands and waaayy less UTI's, if you couldn't tell.) I used to use the Coloplast straight caths, switched to Cure Medical caths, and the SpeediCaths are by far, the best.
I will have to search for a maybe-portable cathing mirror to make my life even easier.
The speedicath is an excellent catheter for self catheterization but I find that it's a bit stiffer then the usual Med-Rx catheters I use. Since hypersensitivity is a big issue with me, I go with what's more comfortable over what's more convienient.

Someone needs to invent a small portable cathing mirror with a built in insertion guide to make life a bunch easier for women who catheterize,us guys are way easier.
