I never knew it was possible until I went to the doctor for a suspected UTI because I had all the symptoms- increased spasms, pain, urgency, incontinence- BUT my urine was clear as water and had no smell. The doctor treated me with Macrobid, which seemed to work, but I still had a rash that looked similar to razor burn. (I think it was hives & I shave down there so it's easier to cath.) I ended up taking some Benadryl for a reaction to a food, and all my symptoms disappeared. I finished out the antibiotics, just in case I was wrong, but, when the culture results came back, there was absolutely nothing!
I have started to take a cranberry supplement (Cran-Actin 3-4x per day) with very good luck. I also started using SpeediCath (Standard), and pain with cathing is a thing of the past. I hope to try the SpeediCath Compact soon, and switch over completely to the SpeediCaths. My tubes of lube keep getting contaminated, and that spells U.T.I.
A couple nights ago, we had a little get-together, just 2 friends and me, to cheer me up after a stressful week. We went in. The hot tub, in which my friend uses Bromine instead of Chlorine, and the next morning, BAM! Some UTI symptoms and a rash on my leg. My bladder sphincter must have relaxed while in the hot tub (don't worry, my bladder was empty!) and some of the hot tub water must have seeped in.
I just took 4 tsp (about 30 ml?) of liquid Benadryl, and in ten minutes, voila! No more symptoms except the color & stink of the Pyridium I took. (Anyone notice that when u take that stuff, your pee smells nasty?)
Anyway, with all our talk of recurrent infections, I thought, "maybe those odd UTI's that never culture out are only allergic reactions!
So, if you've switched body washes, wipes, lube, have been in a hot tub or different water properties than you're used to, etc, you might want to try taking a Benadryl or other antihistamines. I prefer liquid allergy medication because it works faster. There's no pill-dissolve-wait of 20 minutes.
I hope you guys remember this, because allergic reactions can be fatal.

Thanks for sharing Knight, its real helpful advice! Reminds me of when i showered with a shower gel...and i would never do again!
I dont normally use anything on my body with perfume in and my soap is natural soap and non perfumed...Even when i use perfume, i spray onto clothes rather than skin...
My bladder will not hold any urine today. I either have a bowel impaction pushing on it, or it's the fact that soon, a murder scene will be in my underpants. My urethra is still in spasm mode and I had the most difficult time getting a cath into the opening, and couldn't get it through the sphincter. My bladder sphincter is spasmed shut and only releases when my bladder is FULL, meaning 600-1000mL. After I get the ganglion cysts in my hand and wrist drained, I'll pop over to the walk-in clinic and ask what to do. No more hot-tubbing for me!

600-1000ml is dangerously full Knight. I think its best you put in a foley and take it easy until the UTI has cleared.
I got it under control with some Macrobid! There's no bladder leakage while awake, but I've been taking melatonin so I can sleep (I live across a main street from the train depot, so you can imagine the noise.) I guess I get in such a deep sleep, everything relaxes! I would rather get decent sleep & pee clear than the alternative! My bladder sensation is starting to come back; it's faint, but there. I'm voiding every 4-5 hours while awake and getting about 400 mL now.
it wasn't the bromine that I reacted to; my friend figured it out. He put vanilla scent in the hot tub & I guess I'm allergic to it!
