Spinal cord injury, as those of us who are realistic, all this hype of stem cell research is a load of embryonic whoha that give false hope to either the newly injured or those unable to accept reality that spinal cord injury is one where our disability is obvious and here to stay. Those of us who are full time wheeliechair users, our disability is more obvious in comparison to one who is unable to read what I am writing or he or she that may walk past you with more problems than you.
Frame of mind, happens, move on, deal with it and what comes with it and be the man/woman you want to be, you have two choices, one being that where you sit on your ass and enter into early scoliosis due to the chip on your shoulders weighing you down and ostracizing yourself from those around you due to being a complete negative son of a bewildered. Secondly, you can have strength of mind to reach beyond what is expected of you and never set limitations, well, there is the fact that changing light bulbs can be a tad bit difficult, but all else is perspective, as a para, I do more than most men do while standing on shoe leather and think nothing of it.
Rather than doing a Reeves on it and living each day in not accepting reality, I think it better to live life with the cards that have been dealt and make the most of it.
For quads, this can be more difficult yet I know of high levels that have lived 90% of an independent life and got on with life and have put some para’s to shame with their mentality.
For some, hospital visits, physio, etc etc dictates their lives since entering the chair. I say, live life and remember quality is better than quantity.
What I am trying to say here is, get out there and put those “able bodied” to shame in your abilities, whatever it is you do, do it with pride and shove two fingers up to the typical “categorization” of the wheeliechair user.
Humour is a necessity and if one is unable to take the mick out of themselves then they have no god (he doesn’t really exist, scientific fact) given right to take the mick out of anyone else, personally I believe I hold the view that everyone is fair game, and I must add, I do mimic a good down syndrome and it can work wonders while out and about, those with me at the time tend to remove themselves from my person, I still can’t figure out why?
Those who disagree, bet you’re googling “stem cell research so to make me walk again”....
I gotta go now and ask my carer to scratch my ........ :hump:
Regards,
Wolverine.
