Anyone here have an Illeal conduit? Colostomy? The love of my life broke his neck in 1992. So, 22yrs+ post injury. C5/6 incomplete. He used a condom catheter until 2006. Indwelling catheter placed during emergency surgery to remove kidney stone stuck in right ureter where it connected to bladder in 2006. Woke up from that surgery with incredible burning pain in his bladder that has never subsided. In 2008 he got a suprapubic catheter. Again the burning pain, pressure, and reflux to his kidneys has never subsided. Since getting the suprapubic he has been treated with IV antibiotics twice for Pseudomonas. Easly we want to reduce or eliminate the infections to extend the quantity of his life. However, the pain is robbing him of the quality of life. If anyone has an illegal conduit, we would love to hear any and all details, the good, the bad, the ugly. We know that if we do this there's no going back. Try Botox injections to his bladder walls once and it didn't really help but for about a week and even then it only took the pain down from a constant eight to about a seven. Since his last trip to the hospital for treatment of Pseudomonas the pain is still higher than ever and constantly 10 out of 10.
The doctors are suggesting an Illeal conduit. He already has a colostomy and has since 2009. The colostomy has been great.
I know a woman who had a radical cystectomy and placement of an ileal conduit after bladder cancer--this seems to be the most common use of the procedures. The pain in her bladder stopped, ie, no "phantom" pain. And after initial healing (which was somewhat lengthy), the stoma was not difficult to maintain and not at all painful. However, she has taken great care of her stoma to avoid breakdown of tissue. Infection has not been an issue for her, but she did not start with infection such as pseudomonas. She has had her ileal conduit for about 35 years, and is now in her late 80s! It sounds as if your companion might benefit greatly from pain reduction alone, but the infections are still a risk.
Hello mandg, I have had urostomy surgery two and half years ago, using the Ileal conduit. I started like everybody else, I guess. Intermittent cath, (while I was working — oh what a joy that was), then went the suprapubic way — disaster city: it leaked, I stunk of urine. Disgusting. Then I went with indwelling catheters, and then my urethra has such a large diameter that I had to think of something else. I researched the ilea conduit, decided that was for me. So one surgeon who was a real a**hole. Thank god a friend suggested a second opinion. I have been VERY happy with this. Once you find the right pouches and you figure out how to take care of yourself, it is easy. Unfortunately the urine stinks when I empty the pouch. I’m told that’s normal since the urine goes through a piece of Ileal intestines (it’s been cleaned up of course but still...) Feel free to ask me any questions you have. Good luck to you.

Hipcrip- mandg asked her question in 2014.
I step in the water, but the water has moved on...
Hahahahaha! Newbie mistake, not looking at the date of the posts. Also I noticed that my autocorrect is out of control. I’ll try and reread what I wrote before I post.
