Ive been taking look at this facebook page called Rebound and their website. This is actually a feature documentary about wheelchair basketball players and what they go through to achieve in their sport
The Miami Heat Wheels are a competitive wheelchair basketball team, contending for both a National Championship and the local support they need to keep the gym doors open like many other programs around the country. The team is about more than basketball, it’s an outlet for a roster of charismatic athletes – individuals looking for a community of their own and an opportunity for a better life.
The story reveals the raw, uncut reality of what it’s like for athletes living with disabilities, and the impact of the sport on their lives.
Take a look at the video, it does look like an amazing documentary, this is the trailer
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the sport I played w/c BB for 38 years. For 30 of those years I played with and against the best teams in the country. Besides my faith in God, BB was the most important element in my emotional and social rehabilitation. It also helped me to maintain good general and cardio health. The downside is that there is inevitable wear and tear on the hands, elbows, and shoulders, as you get older. To me it was worth it.
I traveled all around the country be car, van, and plane. I made great friends with guys I played with and against. I was able to satisfy my personal need for competition.
For anyone interested in playing, you need use of your hands and arms. It helps if you have played BB in the past. To play significant minutes you need some athletic ability. Things have changed over the past 10 years as some colleges are offering scholarships for w/c BB. Those guys have a tremendous advantage as they practice and play every day; they have the best coaching; they have the best equipment; and they are all young. It wasn't that way when I started in 1973. Politics impacts every organization. Don't let that influence you if you really want to play. Just do it.
That's awrsome Lαrα & hobo! Wheelchair sports are definately awesome. I know a few people that play wheelchair basketball and my buddy jesse is in one too. I'd love to give it a try one day!
hobo, thank you for sharing this! You must have amazing stamina to have played for 38 years! My mother was great at BB, but I wasn't even before paralysis, so probably not a time to start... I admire that you could do this.
