I have been thinking about this since a chat with one of our members a few days ago. I feel this is such an important subject and im sure some may disagree with me but its still warrants discussion.
Although i remain positive (to a point only) on a cure for spinal cord injury, i also remain realistic. We will all have different perspectives on this and mine is based on personal opinion and experience of conversations with other SCI individuals.
I am slightly cynical but where as i remain positive on SCI cure, i do think that we shouldnt hold out for it completely. If it happens, it happens but im not holding my breath, or anything else for that matter whilst it may or may not emerge.
I remember speaking with a guy one time who's life is literally on hold and he would refer always to 'the cure' that will enable him to walk again. I hope for his sake and everyone elses that it comes but i more hope that he starts living the life that he has now.
We will always hear how close research is to finding a cure but we will always hear that because research companies need backing and financial support. If there is no hope and no chance, of course they wouldnt get backing but they do need to show that they are making progress.
I was reading yesterday about a drug that was being developed and shown to be successful in promoting growth in nerve fibres. It took them 10 years to be listened to because their approach was diverse.
The conditions and factors that will bring a 'cure' will have to be challenged and tested, supported and proven. Then there will be 'criteria' and the time factor of length of injury and other associating issues.
I think we need to be given clear and understandable understanding about SCI research and cure because many dont understand it. I know i dont and i want to know, in easy understandable terms. I dont want blinding with science, that is no help and no use.
The word 'Cure' is branded about the SCI world with the misconceptions that run around with them. What exactly is going to be considered SCI cure. I would think it damned amazing if some bladder and bowel function returns and of course with that, an improvement in sexual function.
Where is all the money going? Is it being used on realistic aims? Does the bulk of funds go for a cure that enables someone to walk?
It is so important to be pro active now, use every day to make a difference! Work at your own improvements, you will be amazed the difference you can actually achieve.
You can do for yourself what hundreds of thousands and thousands of dollars is not doing for you (yet)!
DO your daily stretches
DO join a gym or set your own routine up for exercise twice a day (at least)
DO one thing every day that you think you cant do...(you will be surprised what you can achieve with small steps every day)
DO something new at least once a week.
DO journal every day so you can measure the progress you THINK you arent making because you ARE and WILL make progress
DO reassess medication and any issues that you have medically on a regular basis, have a regular appointment set up so you can discuss the way forward with your health and any concerns you have.
DO have a moan and a rant here on the forum if you need to.
DONT make excuses any more...for not making improvement, not improving your diet or stopping smoking..and the rest ( we all do it!)
If the elusive cure comes then great, you will be fighting fit and ready, if it dosent come then you will be as fit as strong as possible and LIVING life.
DJ, if anyone would like one, can we set a password'ed area for members who wish to journal and seriously rant?
