I know that for most people, their life experiences won’t include needing a wheelchair.
So, on behalf of my fellow wheelie brothers and sisters, I’d like to give you a glimpse into our world.
1. Hurting feet are less of a problem
But (and in my case it’s a big butt) bum ache can be a huge problem.
If only they made Party Feet for bottoms I’d be up all night.
2. We’re sexy and we know it After a popular hotel chain decided to put twin beds all disabled access rooms, I had a nice chat with a receptionist at the hotel letting her know that the majority of disabled people, myself included, have a healthy sex life. There were blushes and they weren’t mine.
3. We’re not all Paralympians in waiting
The Paralympics did great things for the disabled community, and for able bodied people’s perception of the disabled community. But sport is not the only thing we do well. There is as much of a divergence of skills and interests in the disabled community as there is anywhere else.
4. The world is not flat Now I know that this is something Aristotle put pay to years ago, but for wheelchair users it means something entirely different. Steps, stairs, kerbs and even a chunky door threshold mean that I’m not going where you’re going, and why all plans with friends begin with lots of questions, Google searches and phonecalls to avoid a last minute journey home as friends pile into the restaurant that ‘just has one step’.
5. Tubes and other public transport can be tricky Or even impossible to access for a wheelchair user.
"The world is not flat" is a great one. It's shocking how such minor bumps and thresholds get my wheels caught and how hard it is to push/slow down on unlevel ground!
When i take my chair to the beach for a roll, its so perfectly smooth and flat by our beach. The council spend probably millions on miles of beautiful sidewalk by the beach and then made it sloping....and my arms ache!
' The world isnt flat' It sure makes you feel that all the great work achieved by Eratosthenes and Christopher Columbus was a waste eh DJ
