If anyone is interested in getting into racing, in hand cycles or wheelchairs, this blog highlights races in the GTA!
There are links throughout the blog listed below to the race websites for you to check out.
This blog was written by Kevin Mills, who is a C5/6 quadriplegic and has participated in all the highlighted races. If you have any questions or want any more information about getting into racing, especially as a quadriplegic, please feel free to send him an email at kevin@walkitoffrecovery.org
Hello everyone. I have been a member for a while, but have only been reading. This is my first post. I really enjoy this site. There is so much good information on it. I asked Rebecca to put up the link to my blog about handcyle races as I was having password isues (I forgot it). I am doing the Younge street 10k tomorrow. We have 15 handcycles competing which is a sold out race. It is great to see the sport growing.

Welcome kevin, thats pretty amazing! All the best for the race tomorrow and it will be great if you can come back and share with us how it goes. 10K is a long way!
It is the shortest handcycle race of the year but still pretty far. It starts at Younge and Eglington. It goes strait down Younge street to the lakeshore. It is a fast downhill course and a great season starter. I will let you know how it goes.
The race went really well. It was colder than expected with a strong head wind. I beat last years time by 3 minutes. Top spead was 44km/hr, but was hoping to break 50. It was a really great group of racers. Everyone was helping each other out and was happy to be there. Amazing atmosphere. I think someone asked for an allen key and was handed 4 sets.

Haha that's awesome kevin, glad to hear it went well! Maybe I'll join you next year.

Hey DJ. I think you would like handcycling. The only issue is making the investment to try it, especially for quads. The bikes are a specific fit like wheelchairs and it is hard to find demo bikes. Lara, do you still ride horses? I grew up around horse farms. My sister rides and is applying for the RCMP mounted unit. A few people have told me how beneficial riding is for spinal cord injuries.
