LL5, if you were able to swim prior to SCI, swimming now should be easy. If swimming is your issue (not quite sure reading your post), just do it. Since we lose so much muscle due to SCI, floating is natural. I never did learn how to swim prior to SCI, but I later married and my wife had a swimming pool. After some trial and error I took a deep breath, held it, and ducked under the water. I popped right back up to the surface, laid on my back and started to back stroke. I can swim normally under the water, but can only back stroke on top of the water. The only downside to swimming for me is that it adds stress to my shoulders. After 40 some years of SCI they are somewhat worn with small tears and spurs. Since you sound like a much younger newbie, you should be fine for years. Swimming helps to keep you flexible, takes stress off your joints, and improves cardio. Give it a try.
