I thought this thread would be interesting and highlight some of the different issues that are faced in Male and Female catheterizing. Not that im wanting to be competitive because of course women have it tougher (joking!) but I do think this will help in raising awareness
Consider these points in the discussion maybe?
Hygiene, female menstruation
Anatomy:Distance of the bladder from entry
Is there more or less risk of external bacteria entering the bladder
Pain, spasms, hypersensitivity and altered sensation
Volumes
male erections during catheterizing
From my opinion, i know that women have to be very careful to ensure a strict hygiene regime is carried out. Anatomy wise, bacteria is easier to travel from the anus to the bladder in women rather than guys. Your distance is quite a few inches apart ( varying maybe!)
Of course both men and women need to follow a strict regime but women more so because of this. Also catheterizing during a period is a nightmare, you clean and clean and then clean more and you are dealing with a messy situation sometimes!
In terms of hypersensitivity, i don't have this problem, i have significant altered sensation in this area but thankfully not hypersensitive.
Im not sure if there will be any significant factors causing spasms for men or women differently but mine occur when the catheter enters the bladder, the sphincter reacts. Is this the same for some guys or can spasm be initiated on inserting into the penis?
For me, the most annoying thing is to insert the catheter into the vagina instead of the urethra as I have to start all over again with a new catheter etc
Is it more difficult to self catheter with an erection ( if erection is a reaction from touch)? Of course we don't have this issue!

It is much much harder for women!!! I always knew that, because it's harder to get the catheter in, women don't have a condom option like us. Besides that it is very hard sometimes for me to find an appropriate toilet, accesible, large enough, and I just roll to it! Women have to transfer...
After reading everything you mentioned Lαrα, I am even more convinced women have it worse, I didn't even think about period... Geez... As a man I definitely have it easier. Good thing that when it comes to sci, men to women ratio is around 80-20, I think.
I can't really comment on the sensation, as catheterising doesn't hurt or anything. Erections - sometimes they occure during, but that's not a problem, I can pee even like that

Not to mention I pee everywhere, pop the catheter in, pee in the plastic bottle, or just let the urine run through the plastic from the catheter out (next to me). Women probably need a toilet...
I have a problem because I need to catheterize led back a little on a bed so I have a medical bed at home I can do it with my eyes shut though lol The worst thing for me is having a spasm as i start to catheter!

My point exactly... Men should really be grateful!
And let me stress out once again urinal (condom), if you are leaking, just put it on and you are done. I don't think there is anything similar out there for women, or is it?

In that sense we're definitely luckier to have the condom option. For woman I guess it's a foley or constant catheterizations.
I personally have sensation there and it's actually hypersensitive so catheterizing hurts and having an erection while cathing is a lot more painful!
I consider myself very lucky, as I have very little sensation, cathing is very easy for me. I Cath five or six times a day, I couldn't imagine the discomfort if I had more sensation. As for women apart from the hygiene issues just finding the right place to insert the catheter must take some practice.
And here was i thinking we had it tough! Well I never thought I would even grasp the concept of catheterizing...Personally I always thought it would be harder for a guy.
Europedude, you are always considerate...and DJ..i feel for you, sounds painful! Butiki..bonus! lol But seriously, thankyou for being open and honest, its posts like this that actually offer real advice and information for other members by those who have first hand experience.
I certainly think the hygiene aspect is easier for guys, whats your thoughts?
Even if we disregard periods, hygiene is definitely easier for us. And one more thing I forgot - some of you (or all the women even?) have to use a mirror down there, so another minus for the ladies...
It also depends on location, for example in some countries toilets are accessible, no problem finding one, and in other finding a suitable toilet can be difficult! I already mentioned my problems, small toilets, or narrow doors, but in the worse case I go outside, can't even imagine the trouble women have, having to transfer,...

Well, i learnt how to catheterize using a mirror and then found my way round after that but im not always that smart because i do have a few near misses in which i have to start all over again

I can only imagine, but in my head it would seem harder for the ladies. There are people with limited hand function that can do it with one hand, that would be tricky. I was told if I was having a hard time getting it in it helps to be semi-erect. Gives you a straighter shot in and it does work. You females seem to have more complicated plumbing than us not to mention childbirth and sore boobs, no sex change in my future.
I think guys have it worse, in my opinion, except when that time of the month rolls around. I was lucky and got to skip 3 years worth of periods, but my hormones changed and BAM! Biggest pain in the ...urethra. I almost always get a UTI or yeast infection while on my period. Like Lαrα said, you wipe and wipe and wipe and still get stuff all over! And if you mess up and miss, you just wasted-- in my case-- a $2+ catheter! And with the cramps, it's so difficult to tell if my bladder is full or if I'm just cramping.
But... I can't imagine trying to cath having my sensation (I'm partially hypersensitive & part numb down there) as a guy! I'm glad my reproductive organs are all inside me! It makes transfers pretty easy.
And for the record, Europedude, I can cath into a bottle!

Sorry Knight, looks like Im still quite lost when it comes to women's cathing... I still have the brochure from rehab in my mind, where it was explained that (probably for newly injured women) a woman has to lay down in bed, use a mirror,... Looked complicated! So sorry for these implications...
still I have to say I am with kilg0retr0ut, no sex change in the future Mostly because of what you said Knight, hormones, periods,... And yes I can be glad, "glad", that luckily (luckily???) I don't have sensation in my urethra.
