Great sharing of your experience randomro, this is so helpful for others to learn from your experiences from old to new SCI individuals.
The most difficult place that I had to catheter was in the back of a horsebox on journey to a show .
Lαrα & randomro, I cathed off a picnic table while a friend held my legs up this past weekend! We were camping, and the bathrooms were locked! Who would open a campground and not unlock the restrooms? North Dakota, that's who.
Hey knight. You mentioned camping. Have you found a tent that works well with wheelchairs? I go camping with my family and my mom and dad. My mom and dad widened the door to their trailer and we use a folding ramp. It is great but I would love to go tent canping again.
kevin,I went camping last year in a tent, I took my medical bed mattress and had it raised off the ground a little, you can buy one of those airbeds that you can pump up to save space but I would still raise it a little off the ground.
It was much easier to get out of bed that way, you don't want to use excessive energy and wear yourself out just on transfers. Be super organised, we take a chemical toilet instead of a portaloo and you can buy special loo roll that biodegrades, which is pretty useful so less storage too.
If you are going to a campsite, you should have electric hook up so take lightbulbs and those long plug sockets as they are safer. Unless you are using lamplight only.
I could write a thread of camping tips if anyone would find it useful?
Knight, When i cathed in my horsebox, I did have a male friend with me but he is gay so it dosent count and i made sure i kept my dignity ! I did make him close his eyes though, it was more funny than anything else because the horsebox was moving and it was almost impossible to catheter!
Im just reviving this thread after seeing how my Dad is dealing with having to have a permanent indwelling in. He found out 6 weeks ago that he retains now, this had occurred from a UTI that wasnt treated to which he went on to developing urinal sepsis and abscesses.
He really does not mentally cope with a catheter and all he can think about is trying to manage without it. Every time they try him without a catheter, he ends up retaining and in so much pain.
A suprapubic has been suggested to him and to be honest I think it may be a better option for him.

Sounds as if SPC would be answer, if the people giving him care are on top of his getting it changed out on time to avoid another UTI. D-mannose would be a good thing for him, too as preventative of infection.

Best deal at www.amazon.co.uk/D-Mannose-Powder-170-Foods-Seller/dp/B00JWKDF6A. One scoop (3.5cc) before breakfast, with full glass of water (good to rehydrate upon awakening anyway!), and again about an hour after evening meal, so he can empty bladder before retiring. When I have a UTI, I use a scoop about every three hours, followed by full glass of water. D-mannose has almost no taste, so can even be added to water. D-mannose crystals attract bacteria to attach, and flushing removes all from bladder and urethra.
It's the trade name for Solifenacin. it costs more than Oxybutynin but it doesn't have the side effect of causing dry mouth. Also, I only need to take it once a day.

Ohh ok I see, thanks!
I've actually come right off Ditropan last week to see how it feels. So far so good so hopefully it stays that way!
Im a male,21 did not get the condom option because i coudn't pee. First off felt like i was getting stabbed all the way to my bladder, then there is a constant burning sensation in the tip of the penis and down the shaft. When i got an erection is multiplies the burning/stinging sensation. Hopefully this helps!!
