kilg0retr0ut, Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease causes neck and is the main cause of cervical disc herniation.
Cervical is the upper area of the spine that is affected. Degenerative Disc Disease is one most common reason discs herniate and become a problem if not managed correctly although it does tend to be more the Lumbar region that is affected this way.
The bony part of the spine is what 'degenerates' and then squashes down on the discs and this starts the 'bulging' and trapping nerves, causing pain.
From my understanding, it generally needs management and its a mixture of genetics and external stresses etc but as with everything, it has a spectrum of potential worsening.

Considering the repetitive stress on neck all throughout a life, it's no surprise that in some stage anyone will experience neck pain. As long as we talk about cervical disc disease, it just goes beyond a normal neck pain. A degenerative procedure can cause radiating pain along with numbness and weakness in upper part of body. All effective treatments are based on accurate diagnostic of the disease thus your physician will read complete medical history, conduct various physical examination and test like X-RAY.

Thanks for all the replies. It didn't click in my head that it was the same as degenerative disc disease, just in the neck. Booktrout's cousin called to ask her what she knew about it, having been diagnosed with it. I feel a tad slow.
Welcome Lasonyhaller I agree, and that was very well put. We may be seeing earlier and more frequent cases, considering most people nowadays have their faces attached to some mobile device.
