Hello Everyone, I was wondering if anyone has ever had PRP injections into their shoulders or joints? It is supposed to help rebuild tissue, muscles etc. Here is some information on it. I am looking to have it done in my shoulders. I currently have cortisone injections every three months. They help a lot! Overtime (years ) its said cortisone breaks down tissue. I want to prevent it. so I am reaching out to see if we have anyone that tried this. Thank you and have a great weekend. Best Regards Joe
PLATLET RICH PLASMA (PRP)
What is PRP?
PRP is an acronym for Platelet Rich Plasma which is an emerging modality being used in the treatment of orthopedic, musculoskeletal, skin and dental conditions as well as sports injuries. This procedure is rapidly becoming "mainstream" with many professional and elite athletes having received the treatment. The process involves preparing an autologous (same donor and recipient- it’s yours) tissue graft of platelets from a patient’s own blood. The person being treated has some blood removed, which is spun in a centrifuge that separates the blood components eventually creating a solution of concentrated platelets.
Depending on the indication, the solution may be injected into ligament, tendon, joint, or grafts (tissue or hardware) prior to being transplanted or implanted to aid in healing and improved structural integrity. PRP is being used with success to promote wound (ulcer) healing in diabetics and people with bad circulation. PRP is being used to coat titanium implants during lumbar spinal fusion and to aid healing from complicated fractures and post joint replacement procedures1. One study demonstrated treatment of patients with chronic elbow tendinosis with buffered platelet-rich plasma significantly reduced pain.
The website of the facility is www.newjerseysportsmedicine.com , Dr. Jerry Malanga is the one who specializes in this procedure. I was told from my Spinal cord doctor many Pro Athletes are treated here. Expecially all the players from the New York Jets, Giants and Philadelphia Eagles. If it works for them maybe it will work for us.
joemonte, great discovery! I really hope this helps you, as repeated steroid injections will break down bone and tissue even though they help pain. I thought 3 was limit for one joint. No risk of rejection since what you describe is autologous. Wonder if it takes a pro athlete's paycheck to get this treatment?!
I was briefly told the treatment for both shoulders would be in the range of $2,000-$3,000. They said one injection is usually good unless there is major breakdown , where they would do multiple over a course of a year. I have been getting my shoulders shot up for multiple years. They help me tremendously so I can lift free weights and stay strong. I don't know if the trade off is worth it but it gives me a lot of independence having strength. I am 52 and hope to have many more good years. This is why I thought these PRP shots might be worth a try. Trying to find any Sci people who have had them done but no luck. I wish everyone a great Memorial Day weekend.
