I have heard of this but thought it was mostly for issues directly related to issues within the body that cause hormone in-balance. It was interesting to read that hormone replacement is sometimes given in the case of Spinal Cord Injury related issues.
There are physical changes that occur within the body after injury and there becomes less lean tissue and more fat, bone density changes which causes concerns of fractures.
Hormone replacement can help deal with some of these issues by helping to increase muscle mass and also helps build up the skeletal muscle size. This in turn will help prevent pressure sores as the skin integrity isnt compromised quite the same.
Another bonus ( or not, depending on the individual) is that it can increase the sex drive!
As with everything, there are side effects to consider
Side effects of testosterone replacement include an increased risk for prostate cancer and prostatic hypertrophy (excessive growth), liver toxicity; thickening of the blood; development of or increase in sleep apnea or severe heart failure.
Infertility is an issue so sperm should be banked prior to beginning hormone replacement therapy if you are planning a family at any time.
Gynecomastia or development of the breast can occur. There is an increased risk for breast cancer which men can develop with hormone replacement but a small number of men develop breast cancer even without hormone replacement therapy.
Yes, men can get breast cancer, too, although very rarely
The article that i sourced has lots of great information on the advantages and dis-advantages of male hormone replacement and is written by someone experienced in Spinal Cord Injury .
Testosterone Replacement therapy was a major success for me. I was involved in a clinical study at Kessler Institute back five years ago. It was for Sci guys who were clinically low. After being on the "T" replacement for the first six months, my nerve pains were decreasing. I started to gain muscle , loose fat and was gaining energy again. I felt alive for a change. I then started to decrease and eliminate all the drugs I was on. My pain levels still were disappearing. I was getting thrilled and couldn't believe how good I was feeling. A year into the study, I eliminated all of my medications, loss a tremendous amound of body fat from atrophy and gained great strength once again. It also increased my immune system and I gained a lot of endurance. It gave me a lot of independence to move around better too.
Five years later I am happy to say that I am drug free. I was checked a couple of weeks ago and still maintained my muscle mass, weight and lean tissue. I truly have not been sick in years. Once in a while I will get a day I feel tired but overall I feel alive again. It literly changed my life for the better. I currently take 1/2 ml of 200mg Testosterone shots each week. My levels are now normal and my body functions great. I was one of many in the study and all of us had nothing but positive results. I have no side effects . The papers were published. If anyone wants the data from the study, I can email it to you. Email me at joemonte@nep.net.
I highly recommend all Sci individual to get there "T" levels and hormones checked. If you are clinically low , it does cause havoc on the body.
